DES MOINES Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called humane but that his opponents quickly decried as providing amnesty.
The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

We need to remember why Gingrich was knocked out of the Speaker’s chair in the late 1990s to begin with. Conservative House members got fed up with him constantly caving to Clinton and allowing Clinton to hike federal spending as a percentage of GNP to what was then a post World War II high. Gingrich wasn’t knocked off for being too conservative, but for being too conciliatory.

NO Amnesty.
NO Newt.
All humans have basic rights. Citizens of sovereign states are granted certain privileges and immunities by that state. There are things a German citizen can get away with in Germany that you could not. There are things a Mexican in Mexico can get away with that you can not. It has nothing to do with human rights, but with the advantages of being the citizen of certain country while residing in that country. If all foreigners were fully entitled to all the privileges of American citizenship, what would be the significance of being an American citizen?
Look, he is not PERFECT but it is THE MEDIA telling us we have ‘backlash’ against him- so we all better jump on the Romney wagon.
I DONT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH WHAT HE SAID
You can’t just throw millions of people out of the country. The biggest problem with imigration is how do you suddenly enforce a law that has been ignored (and even promited by democraps) for 40 years.
Do you tell people “You f*cked up - you trusted Democraps”, and let the GOP throw them all out of the country?
Some here have never lived in Mexico since childhod- they wont have a place to go to if we DID send them out.
I say LOCK THE BORDERS and Wean people off the system- NO NEW WELFARE for illegals- you comehere and have a baby, then you go home on the next plane. That would immediately stop the inflow.
JAIL TIME for people who hire illegals- and require anyone ‘undocumented’ to get documented pretty dam quick
It is a 40 year problem it HAS TO BE handled “humanely” to fix it
Sorry to burst your bubble but Newt’s problems run far deeper than what he said at the last debate nor has what the media had to say about him affected my opinion of him. Newt Gingrich is a RINO and he is not to be trusted. Feel free to support him all you’d like. I’ll pass.
With dis-loyal Americans like the poster I was replying to yes I'm ashamed to be a part of his/her citizenship and if you are defending such bad behavior then I am ashamed of you as well. So tell me ez, do you believe in the rule of law or do you believe in anarchy too? I already suspect what you believe in.
Just pointing out you went a little over the top. :(
“You cant just throw millions of people out of the country. “
Yes we can.
I'm not sure Newt's immigration stance will really hurt him with the the typical TEA party or conservative GOP voter who likes Newt's positions on some of what I consider the top tier issues which I mentioned.
And it will probably help him with some other, more independent or moderate voting demographics...
I think 8 duplicate post in a row must be a record of sorts.
Republicans are headed to losing an unlosable election

Spot on. We’ve managed to shoot our own wounded. The only ones left who have not been destroyed by the media and all of us narrow-minded Conservatives (and I’m just as bad as everyone else) is Romney, Huntsman and Santorum; two RINOs and one Conservative (with the charisma of a footstool) who got booted out of the Senate by the people of PA by about 19 percentage points. I see four more years of Obama coming. I hope he friggin’ destroys the Economy to the point that we deserve what we get. That’s the only thing that’s going to “send a message”; not, forming a Third Party or sitting out the Election. I guess we’re going to have to be brought to our knees in order to get our s**t together. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL MAMA!
If Newt is gone, thatll leave Romney as the survivor.
BINGO!!! We have a winner!!! Romney will end up being the GOP nominee because the Conservatives cannot unite behind one candidate. It’s the nature of the Conservative beast: We will bite our nose off to spite our face. Start preparing your hearts, and minds, NOW my FReeper Brothers and Sisters; it is very possible we have blown this thing and Obozo will be back in the White House for 4 more years. Many Conservatives will stay home or vote Third Party before they’ll vote for Romney, while the Dems, on the other hand, even though many are very disappointed in Obozo, will unite together in the end, as they always do, and defeat a wounded, splintered Repuplican Party again.
ILLEGAL immigration isn't just about Mexicans. There has been a drastic rise in "OTMs" or Other than Mexicans who are crossing our borders. Honestly, I don't care if they are white and from Ireland, black and from Jamaica or brown and from Mexico if they broke our laws by coming here ILLEGALLY they should be given nothing but a bus ride back to the border or a jet ride back to their home country. If that makes me heartless or inhumane, then so be it. I'm putting Americans first and I don't give a damn what the pro-ILLEGAL immigration crowd thinks of me because of it.
