Newt Gingrich may face backlash in Iowa over immigration comments

DES MOINES — Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called “humane” but that his opponents quickly decried as providing “amnesty.”

The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

Leviticus 19:34 New International Version (NIV) 34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God. None of us are truly native to this land, our roots started generations ago and in other places.

Uh, since you quoted from the Torah - which was written by Jews in Aramaic, you might wish to know that this passage refers not to "foreigners" as the NIV mischaracterizes, but rather non-Jewish converts to Judiasm. Period. Converts: treat them like any other Jew. It does NOT refer to immigrants, and certainly not to illegal invaders. If you wish I can connect you with the rabbinical scholar who explained this to me. Meanwhile, why don't you go back to the La Raza forums where you would clearly be more comfortable. they enjoy misquoting scripture too.

Newt wants the Hispanic vote. Well there's not a huge Hispanic vote in Republican primaries. If that were his strategy, I'd think he's wait until the general (like the others are doing). Newt chose this moment for some reason.

You don’t need a “comprehensive plan” until and NOT UNTIL you close the barn door first. The two issues are linked only in that you have to do one first before dealing with the other. I don’t need a “comprehensive plan” until the border issue is resolved. This is where conservatives learned from Reagan’s mistakes.

Good point. Maybe Florida however I suspect most Cubans and south Florida have very different views concerning immigration than those of the general Hispanic communities.

You will get flamed...but the reality is that those who scream”NO amnesty , no way” ignore what reagan did and do not want to answer the question of “How do you deport 30 million illegals?”

"What Reagan did" was DEAD WRONG, as was his turning tail and running from Lebanon after our Marines were slaughtered. Reagan is not a god. He screwed up big time, and created a demographic disaster. Had Reagan thought it through logically, he would have anticipated that MILLIONS more than predicted would bum rush the border to get amnesty. He would have realized how many of them would have babies, push schools and hospitals to the breaking point, create Spanish-only towns throughout CA and TX, leave hundreds of thousands on welfare, WIC, food stamps, Medicare, etc. None of that mattered. We were "a nation of immigrants". Illegals "shared our values". Etc. And anyone who disagreed was simply racist. So we got amnesty, and a demographic disaster ensued. Gingrich was all for it. And made it even worse as Speaker in the 1990s. And now he wants even MORE amnesty, as did McCain. No thanks. I will never support another such candidate.

True... then I'd expect to see Romney pandering along with Newt and Perry.

Don't hold your breath waiting for mass deportations of illegals.

It's not going to happen no matter who gets elected.

Why don't you start a thread about Santa Claus being real, just as likely a belief.

The key is to stop companies from hiring them, and stop the Federal and State governments from subsidizing them, and that is Gingrich's position.

Thanks. I have other questions as well...

1) How does the newly created FCDDA (Federal Capture, Detain and Deport Agency) force local administrations (like SF and NYC) to enforce the laws?

2) Do we keep captured families intact or do we house the men here and the women/children there?

3)How do we protect the captured safe from the criminal element among them while they are being detained?

4)How do we handle the inevitable landslide of legal challenges? Do we continue to detain the captured for years while the ACLU fights and ties up our courts?

5) Do we provide health care and education for the captured and detained children?

6) Do we segregate the captured and detained by country of origin, language, religion...or do we lump muslim Indonesians in with Christian Nigerians and marxist Spaniards?

7) Considering the fact that a number of the captured and detained will likely carry TB or Whooping Cough do we forcibly innoculate every one of them against these and other communicable diseases?

8) What will the detention-repatriation camps look like? Garden apartments? Quonset huts behind barbed wire? Will there be uniformed, armed guards on the walls and in the towers? There's a public relations disaster waiting to happen.

9) What do we do about the thousands of legal residents and citizens who will show up at every detention/repatriation camp and chain themselves to the front gates in protest (think OWS on steroids and with an actual cause)?

I see dozens of other problems (such as well-armed, well organized, drug-money funded gangs within the targeted groups going to war over this)...but these will do for a start.

wow...I had never even considered all these possibilities...

I think before we have even begun such a deportation exercsie there will be mass protests, riots, etc.
To those “conservatives” who say”bring it on”, I really don’t think you want to go there....especially when the moral argument of this country encouraging mass immigration and hiring of illegals and for 25 years “looking the other way” is not very strong.

“Gingrich is NOT a dumb man. This was not a “slip”. He brought up this issue on purpose. Why is that? Any theories out there?”

Just like his support for Dede or Global Warming.
He really, really supports amnesty and thinks all we stupid people clinging to guns and religion should simply shut up.

also, as both Perry and Newt say....CLOSE THE BORDER..although I really think Perry has more experience with this than other candidate and a better plan.

Perry brought this up during the last debate...We are getting suckered into talking about how to deal with millions of illegals and go back and forth while the first step is securing the border.

Exactly. That problem will still be there AFTER securing the border and will only get worse until we ssecure the border. Linking the two issues is the standard tactic of those who want full citizenship for illegals or those who simply want to feel good about themselves for being empathetic. I say to these people, close the border first and then we'll worry about your self-esteem.

On his worst day, Newt is a million times better than socialists Obama or Romney.

That being said, I support Herman Cain.

I like Santorum and would also support Bachmann but they are not going anywhere in 2012.

Perhaps you are correct, but I see a resurgence (for a little while) of Bachmann after the last debate and the fallout on illegals from Perry, Mittens, and Newt. One thing you can take to the bank - Bachmann will get up every single day of her Presidency and fight for America, not for the rights of illegals whose first step on this soil was to break the law and now are demanding goodies from the Federal Treasury.

I know what it means in context, and I still believe that my use was not a "miscontrual" of God's will. He also tells them that "just as they were aliens in Egypt - they remained Jews while in Egypt, and conformed as slaves are obligated to conform if they wanted to live.

You and others have a lopsided view of what you would like, vs. what is possible in the real world. I'm not a sympathizer, just a realist.

While the situation sucks, until the borders are sealed, it will continue to get worse. On the other hand, try to picture the logistics of actually trying to ship 10 million or more back to where they came from. To put it bluntly, it aint gonna happen. In today's world, we won't even do things of that proportion to those we are supposedly at war with. Plus, the border is so porous that as fast as we can move them out, they and others will pour back in. Read an article the other day about a perp who was deported 4 times, yet there he was do ing the crime. Might as well break out the guns and blindfolds because it would take a lot of "posses" of like mind going around and exterminating them to have it your way.

Still not sure why Newt trotted out this controversy at a point where he was 30% up. But according to the NYT, this has always been his view:

I was watching the debate and saw him. In my opinion, he was cocky about it too, sort of like daring law-abiding Americans to cross him.

I'm really tired of all the criminal apologists trying to turn ordinary Americans into 'heartless meanies.' Not only are we the enemies of the Left, but of most of the ones who call themselves Republicans.
