Newt Gingrich Stands Out On Immigration At Republican Debate Now one of the leading GOP candidates, the former House speaker takes a softer stand on immigration and in general as he and his rivals field questions on national security and economic issues.
By Paul West, Washington Bureau November 22, 2011
Reporting from Washington Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich took issue with rival Mitt Romney's hard-line stance on immigration Tuesday night as the GOP candidates returned to a pivotal issue in their latest nationally televised debate.
Gingrich said he did not want the Republican Party, which says it puts a premium on "family values," to promote immigration policies that would break up families that have been in this country for many years by expelling those who are here illegally.
"I'm prepared to take the heat for saying 'let's be humane,' " said Gingrich, staking out a moderate position similar to one that proved hazardous to Texas Gov. Rick Perry in earlier debates.
Romney, whose status as the Republican front-runner is threatened by Gingrich's rise, said that any form of amnesty such as providing a path to permanent legal residence, as the former House speaker advocated would become "a magnet" for others to enter the country illegally.

Yawn.
Thread #31 on the same damn thing.
Yawn.
Oops, meant 34, not 31!
How many of you are there, you are posting the response #s to the wrong article tool...
I’m not going to vote for an Open Borders Republican.
I want illegals deported and our borders secured.
It’s just so hard to keep-up with the same couple of folks who keep posting incarnations of the same article on the same topic over and over and over and over and over again.
Once the broken record becomes shards, and then crumbs, and then dust, it gets hard to keep track of all the particles.
Will keep trying, though!
Before anyone berates Newt’s “Immigration Plan”, they need to read it. Then ask themselves what other candidate has given as much thought to the problem? My initial disappointment changed 180 degrees. Newt is thinking in the right direction.
And you have bumped every one of them! Thanks!
NO ILLEGALS.
NO AMNESTY.
NO NEWT.
Newtbots can’t handle the fact they’re supporting an open-borders amnesty democrat for president. Shame!
That’s not the point Dave, they KNOW it’s not what they pretend it is.
The point is to try and use a false premise of his position as a bludgeon to try and bring down Newt in the hopes that their candidate will rise from the ashes and assume his place as Conservative messiah.
They don’t care what’s true, they really don’t. Ain’t a one of them who wasn’t already blasting Newt (and really almost every other candidate who isn’t their chosen one).
It’s fun, though!
I know all twelve of you by heart!
It's also possible that they're pro-amnesty also but just hate the condemnation Newt is getting from real conservatives.
AMEN, BRAH! We have liberal newtbots flooding FR with Open Borders propaganda.
I’m sick of it!
The newtbots have mercilessly attacked Michele Bachmann and accused her of being a “stalking horse” for Romney. They want us to overlook the fact Gingrich is a liberal not qualified to be President. Allen West said he had 200 lbs of baggage. This gives you an idea of what conservatives are up against.
Here is a good read for you! Enjoy!

The pro-ILLEGAL alien crowd at FR has been exposed; Newt's comments have brought them out of the woodwork. There can be no more denial. Supporting a pro-amnesty RINO tells us who they are.
Humane to who? The unemployed citizen who’s good construction job is now taken by an illegal working for $8 and hour in cash? The primary school student who is stuck with 31 spanish speaking classmates and is ignored by the system? The innocent victim of a hit and run drunk driver with no insurance and no license?
Illegal amnesty was the single biggest mistake of the Reagan administration. It allowed millions to become citizens with little proof of qualification and it encouraged millions more to come illegally and wait for the next amnesty.
Secure borders, I agree with you. But there is absolutely no way the U.S. is going to deport the 11 million here illegally. Gingrich is right.
Bachman made a fool of herself on this issue. She is in Congress and is responsible for this problem. What’s her plan...more nothing.
