Newt Gingrich could face ‘Perry Plunge’ over immigration stance (Free Republic Mentioned)

At the top of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich is poised for what some call the “Perry Plunge” for supporting part of the pro-immigrant DREAM Act.

Like former frontrunner Rick Perry, Gingrich became a target of criticism among fellow Republicans at Tuesday night’s nationally televised debate for saying that some people should be allowed to stay in the United States even if they’re here illegally.

The former U.S. House Speaker said longtime residents who have raised families here, paid taxes and stayed out of trouble should not face deportation.

“I don’t see how the party that says it’s the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century,” Gingrich said during the CNN debate.

“I’m prepared to take the heat for saying: ‘Let’s be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families,’” he said.

Gingrich’s comments were quickly blasted on conservative websites like Free Republic.

I agree with you — Newt is a very smart man. I can’t imagine why he would knowingly take a position on an issue that was certain to damage his campaign. I believe there is far more to this story than we may ever know.

Why do you think Newt did what he did? He is a smart man. Was he just being honest and really believes what he says?

Congrats. Your whole post is a red herring.

I'm always touched by the mention of boxcars. It has such a holocaust feel to it. LOL

Intelligent people also know that to give legal status to the ILLEGAL hordes who are here will result in an even greater burden on the American taxpayer. No thanks.

An economy on the brink of collapse and we are arguing over immigration. We fall into the left’s trap every time. Keep the subject off the economy and our attention focused elsewhere and they win. Newt’s views on the economy and how to fix it are important at this time. Worrying about what his position is on immigration is short-sighted. If this economy, deficit and debt isn’t dealt with nothing else will matter.

I am not sure if the illegals are a big issue this election cycle. I look at various polls and see the issue down in the single digit numbers. Right now it is the employment situation. If you want to make the illegal issue a big one, you could tie it into the employment situation. Because the employment is so bad, the illegals can be seen as taking jobs away from those who need jobs. Many of the jobs could be employing ones kid who can’t leave home because they can’t find work. That’s how you can bring the illegal issue to the top of the list. Then these candidates would put on extra thinking caps before they treat the illegal thing so lightly.

I appreciate Newt having the courage to swerve into the left hand lane early. We knew it was coming on a number of topics. What I always find as curious is that the amnesty people have all this compassion for foreign nationals, but not so much for the native underclass. What did McCain say, Americans won't pick lettuce for $50/hr? I bet they will now. Ah the ruling class. G_ love'm.

Golden Oldie

30 million illegals grow our government by their mere presence.

“Gingrich’s comments were quickly blasted on conservative websites like Free Republic.”

A proud day, indeed.

2012 will end with either President Romney or Obama. Either of those outcomes will no doubt satisfy every concern that we have ever had about immigration issues.

By golly, I am very excited.

Romney has the perfect plan, it covers everything we have every complained about and we know he will implement everything he says he will.

As for Obama, well heck, all of our other problems have distracted him or this immigration thing would have already been resolved.... just look at all of the progress he’s already made. I am sure that he could make great progress during his second term.

If we can quickly finish off Gingrich, life will be good again, yes by golly, everything will be good. Heck, even the MSM will like us, because we will have saved them all that work they might otherwise been required to do themselves.

Well, at least we have a plan....

2012 Romney or Obama-— pick one.

I hadn’t seen that before. Quite interesting.

I may be wrong, but I believe mathematicians tend to see things more in black and white, than liberal arts graduates do.

Not bad...

I just saw a story yesterday about the sudden drop in unemployment in Alabama. Seems that Americans are taking jobs they won’t do.

I really think that Gingrich has no principles, no core beliefs, and really has no understanding of conservatives.

There is no shortage of people who want to grow our government. A quick read of any Gingrich pr Perry thread proves that.

I think those things are surgically removed when you sign on as a career politician.

It's nice to know some in the media is paying attention to what is said here. We represent the Tea Party side of the Republican Party.

Here's my opinion. I have some doubts about Newt but would support him if he won the nomination. Also I'd write in Sarah Palin before I'd vote for that kook Ron Paul.
