SAN DIEGO -- Imagine joining the Navy ten years ago with a career in mind. Now, sailors with that career plan are getting pink slips as the military looks for places to save money.
Since June, 16,000 mid-career sailors have been waiting to find out if they will be forced out early.
Last week, the Navy began its layoffs when the first of two rounds of personnel cuts were announced.

"Nobody ever wants to pass this sort of bad news to somebody," said Captain Winton Smith, Naval Station San Diego's commanding officer. "It's a very difficult thing for any commanding officer to sit down with a hard charger and to tell them to prepare for the next chapter of their life.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Been that way for several years now.
Word has been out for some time (at least 4 years) that any mid-level enlisted with “Problems” would be gone.
Some might be involuntarily discharged but many will find other career fields to move to and some of the lesser performing members will be the ones getting let go.
If they can stay as a federal employee, doesn’t their retirement keep accruing?
Hmmm...
Our government's priorities are FUBAR.
Obama is either stupid
or he adheres to communism

Do these count as “Saved and or Created” jobs?
Um....layoffs? The military doesn’t do layoffs. More like...you, you and you. Get out.
Nope! Totally separate from snivel (civil) service.
I really don’t know. The fed has been playing with retirement regs to the point I’ve lost track. I suspect it does.
not to mention the MILLIONS spent on Michelle Obama’s endless vacations!!!
Bad wording. Active duty people aren’t laid off, they are denied reenlistment or are granted early release. But that aside...
This happens periodically. It happened back in 1983 or 1984, can’t remember which. We had our normal summer increase in discharges, plus a sweep of substandard performers, plus a 90 day early release. We had record books stacked on every flat surface of the separations center. Those were some LONG nights just trying to keep up.

ROFL!!! Yep. That’s about it.
Yes if they can find a position open for them.
You got that right, and it isn’t just the Navy.
I had a cousin that went from the Navy to the US Corps of Engineer as a Lock Master. That was in the 60’s. Thirty years and out. Sweet job and retirement.
I don’t remember the accrument figures, but there is some consideration in Federal Service for Military time. It’s not one for one. They used to allow a portion of Military time to be tacked onto the maximum hiring age. For example, if the maximum hiring age was 35, Military time would raise that to say, 40-45. Retirements are seperate. Unless you have twenty good years, you have nothing but points that can be continued in the Guard or Reserve. Someone with 10-12 years active, then joins the Guard or Reserve for enough to get twenty, will see a very decent additional retirement at age 65. These are some the infamous Federal double dippers which, I have no problem with.
The plain truth is that the military has always cut people in overmanned ratings and people who are poor performers. The military is not like being a union school teacher thug with lifetime guaranteed employment. This “report” is trash.
