WASHINGTON — Texas Gov. Rick Perry vowed to completely secure the U.S.-Mexican border within 12 months of being inaugurated president during a GOP presidential debate Tuesday that showcased the emergence of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the go-to alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
In a debate focused on national security, Perry was quickest to the count on border issues, saying he would complete “strategic fencing” along the 1,969-mile U.S.-Mexican border, add “boots on the ground” and aviation assets such as Predator surveillance aircraft to intercept potential Iranian-backed terrorists crossing into the United States from Mexico as well as to stem the northbound flow of undocumented immigrants and illegal drugs.
The three-term Texas governor, clearly comfortable on the topic during his eighth nationally televised debate, said he would work with Mexico to achieve a new level of security and would consider sanctions against Mexican banks that handle the illicit proceeds of multibillion dollar drug cartels.
“All of those together can make that country (Mexico) substantially more secure and our border secure,” Perry declared. “As president of the United States, I’ll promise you one thing – that within 12 months that border will be shut down and it will be secure.”

Perry and Bachmann also briefly dueled over continuing U.S. aid to Pakistan, an Islamic nation of 150 million people with a stockpile of nuclear weapons. Perry reiterated his pledge to zero out annual foreign aid to all countries including Pakistan.
“They’ve showed us time after time that they can’t be trusted,” said Perry, in an elliptical reference to Pakistani authorities knowingly or unknowingly providing haven to bin Laden. “Until Pakistan clearly shows that they have America’s best interests in mind, I would not send them one penny.”

I think he has a good chance also. Newt is my second choice but the “shoot ‘em on sight” illegal alien crowd may cool on him because of his amnesty stand in the debate last night. I hope they don’t but if they do, I hope his support filters down to Perry.
Perry is much warmer and more personable than Newt or Romney.
Maybe the Cain crowd thinks Cain has that vibe going but not with me. He’s my second to last choice after Ron Paul.
Not heartless. Brainless maybe. It’s up to the federal government to secure the border. Rick has tried with the resources he has with no help from the Bumster.
The feds are fighting tooth and nail about doing anything about illegal immigration. I don’t think they want to stop it. Perry does.
You’re reverting to the Clinton defense by playing word games. Perry never called me specifically “heartless” to my face, but his statement makes it clear that he considered anyone to disagree with his position to not have a heart.
Here’s Perry’s quote, “If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for other reason than they’ve been brought there by no fault of their own, I don’t think you have a heart.”
You should really call abuse on that org.who guy. He’s lying about you and abusing you personally.
He’s disrupted, or tried to disrupt, every thread you’ve ever put up. He’s a nuisance.
If you want to clutch your hurt feelings to your bosom after he’s explained and apologized countless times, go for it.
But it’s a small thing to let one word stop you from considering the best person running.
You must pardon me for my skepticism, but Perry has had more than ample time to tackle the immigration problem regardless. Furthermore, offering lawbreakers an education at residence tuition rates, and an opportunity to become U.S. citizens at the same time is hardly fighting the illegal alien crisis.
Thanks altura. I agree that org.whatever-it-is guy is a real nuisance, but know that he disrupts every thread he gets on, not just mine. I know it can be frustrating to the good people here to have to deal with that all the time though. Please know I empathize with you and with the many others that have had to put up with that stuff all the time from him.
I’m also sure people know he’s lying about me. I have posted enough here that everyone would know I have never ever supported amnesty in any form or fashion. That’s just ludicrous, and those kinds of posts are seen for what they are, poor attempts at covert types of activities.
As for personal abuse, I didn’t take it as abuse since I took it as just “stupid”. It would be kind of like getting mad at a pig for peeing on your living room carpet. What could you expect from a situation like that anyway?
Newt is for amnesty and in June 2011 Debate Newt Gingrich called Americans Heartless for wanting to deport 20 million illegals.
"GINGRICH: No, but let me say this, John. No serious citizen who's concerned about solving this problem should get trapped into a yes/no answer in which you're either for totally selling out protecting America or you're for totally kicking out 20 million people in a heartless way. There are -- there are humane, practical steps to solve this problem, if we can get the politicians and the news media to just deal with it honestly."

I think that Newt's support is overstated by the fact that EVERYONE wants to see him debate Obama...but not that many want him as their nominee..

I provided the quote from Perry. He said “...I don’t think you have a heart.” How can you say “...don’t think you have a heart” isn’t essentially the same as “heartless”?
Take your homer blinders off and quit trying to dismiss Perry’s comment. He paid the price for it and rightfully so. Whether Newt pays the price for his comment remains to be seen. Again; I’m not commenting on Newt’s statement. I don’t care about Cain’s or Newt’s comments. I wasn’t commenting on them or trying to dismiss them. I was calling you out for your misleading statement about Perry.

If Cain continues to slip... If Perry can stop slipping...
These are pretty big “Ifs”.
The war in Mexico is a civil war. It has been for quite a while now and everyone in Texas knows that. The Mexican government can’t handle the problem and to keep it from spilling over into the US, we will almost certainly need to send troops into Mexico with or without the good wishes of the Mexican government.
If, or more likely, when we do, we would be well advised to teach the cartels the meaning of “World Class Military Power” and smash them fast and hard. Perry understands this, his people are on the front lines.
We just had a Zeta operation in north Houston last night. It is now time to begin to assess the military options and begin putting assets in place. Again, Perry gets this.
Every one of the other candidates are spouting nothing more than slogans and sound bites. Perry is having to live with it and manage it, in the absence of the federal government, as best he can.
I support Perry and I think he would make a terrific President. He is very familiar with the problem with the border and I feel he can be trusted to shut down the illegal immigration in the twelve months that he stated.
He also understands that the key to a growing economy is cheap energy. In other words, drilling. Lots of it.
Oh, you’re taking the high road which is wise.
I just get really tired of his constant know-nothing posts which are only meant to annoy and disrupt. I wish we had a way to just block his posts. I ignore him and never respond to him but just seeing his name is annoying.
I think Perry would be the most pro-active and passionate on the energy issue which is huge for the U.S.
Cain..it's like he's coasting...his numbers have dropped..along with some intensity...we have to see if he can regain the mojo...He didn't impress me much last night..too much lecturing in his tone..he wasn't passionate...maybe trying too hard to avoid slipping up..
A secure Mexico — Mexican government — is in our best interests. Securing the border will help make Mexico more secure, too. A more secure Mexico means that the Mexican government will be better able to work with us to stop terrorists from entering our country. Make no mistake, the Mexican government is a prime target for terrorists. Gov. Perry knows all of this firsthand. We must secure Mexico, otherwise we could have a terrorist haven next door.
I don’t mind your being skeptical but please be logical.
Texas has had to deal with years of the border being basically ignored by the feds. He’s had to deal with the consequences of that.
Do you blame California for the illegals entering there?
Do you blame Arizona and New Mexico?
Perry has made heroic efforts with the limitations placed on him by Obama (who hates Perry, by the way).
He has a plan to close the border and I believe he will do it. But he can’t do it as governor, it’s a federal problem.
As far as harping on the tuition issue c’mon.
Do you think some Mexican is saying to the wife, ‘let’s cross the border into Texas. I can do yard work for 20 years and you can be a maid and when we have kids maybe one or two of them will get TO PAY FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION at instate rates.’ That’s just a silly argument.
