Missed the debate because of wrestling practice, but it’s hardly surprising that Newt would support amnesty for illegal aliens.

I suppose one should not be surprised you came to that conclusion, since you missed the debate. But if you're interested in making conclusions based on information, here's what he said:

“I did vote for the Simpson-Mazzoli Act. Ronald Reagan, in his diary, says he signed it – and we were supposed to have 300,000 people get amnesty. There were 3m. But he signed it because we were going to get two things in return. We were going to get control of the border and we were going to get a guest worker program with employer enforcement.

“We got neither. So I think you’ve got to deal with this as a comprehensive approach that starts with controlling the border, as the governor said. I believe ultimately you have to find some system – once you’ve put every piece in place, which includes the guest worker program, you need something like a World War II Selective Service Board that, frankly, reviews the people who are here.”

“If you’re here – if you’ve come here recently, you have no ties to this country, you ought to go home. period. If you’ve been here 25 years and you got three kids and two grandkids, you’ve been paying taxes and obeying the law, you belong to a local church, I don’t think we’re going to separate you from your family, uproot you forcefully and kick you out.”

“The Krieble Foundation is a very good red card program that says you get to be legal, but you don’t get a pass to citizenship. And so there’s a way to ultimately end up with a country where there’s no more illegality, but you haven’t automatically given amnesty to anyone.”

“I do suggest if you go back to your district, and you find people who have been here 25 years and have two generations of family and have been paying taxes and are in a local church, as somebody who believes strongly in family, you’ll have a hard time explaining why that particular subset is being broken up and forced to leave, given the fact that they’ve been law-abiding citizens for 25 years.”

“I do not believe that the people of the United States are going to take people who have been here a quarter century, who have children and grandchildren, who are members of the community, who may have done something 25 years ago, separate them from their families, and expel them.”

“I do believe if you’ve been here recently and have no ties to the US, we should deport you. I do believe we should control the border. I do believe we should have very severe penalties for employers, but I would urge all of you to look at the Krieble Foundation Plan.”

“I don’t see how the party that says it’s the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century. And I’m prepared to take the heat for saying, let’s be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families.”

So glad someone posted what he actually said. Personally I’d like to deport all of them, and their families. However, as Newt pointed out, that is just not going to happen, the country is not prepared to do it. So, what’s the alternative? I thought Newt’s idea was pretty good, it is something that is actually doable and it is not amnesty. You have to live in the real world rather than basing your future on the unicorn ranch you are going to build.

given the fact that they’ve been law-abiding citizens for 25 years.

And there's the fatal flaw of Newt's "argument."

Let me show you the pertinent pull quote that everyone is ignoring.

“So I think you’ve got to deal with this as a comprehensive approach that starts with controlling the border, as the governor said. I believe ultimately you have to find some system — once you’ve put every piece in place, which includes the guest worker program,........”

1. CONTROL THE BORDER. In case you didn't notice, this is NUMBER ONE.

2. Guest worker program.

3. THEN, he talks about a way to deal with long time residents with ties, jobs, families, on a case by case basis, to remain here legally SHORT OF CITIZENSHIP.

We are NEVER going to deport all illegal aliens, nor should we. It's not practical, humane, nor even possible. To have the opinion that we just kick out ALL illegals, is just plain IGNORANT. Discussion with anyone with that opinion is like having a discussion with the “Flat Earth Society”.

You can't judge Newt with soundbites. You need to listen to his complete answers.

Thank you Lucky Lady. Newt is right on. If we are real Americans with compassion we can see what Newt was saying. Mexico is rotten to the core with corruption and murder. I would try to escape too and to wait for legal immigration would be a death sentence.

I totally support Newt for President. I cannot believe some of the comments from some of the posters. Some seem to live in a cocoon of stupidity.

It’s a choice to be separated from family; take your anchor babies, and leave.....family remains intact.

don’t expect freepers to actually read information...primary season is not about being informed and rational around here

I thought what Newt said was a start and practical but it gave the others who except Michelle are no different on this topic a chance to take shots at him

I agree with Gingrich on this in general.

The fine points are going to be how to determine who gets any status and how to prevent citizenship.

We can take steps to encourage folks to leave and make it hard for them but armed deportation of millions and millions en masse ain’t gonna happen.

Best shot is prompt to leave and then slower deportaions andexceptions as he declared.

but where to draw the line is the sticky party

a veritable briar patch for anyone...I liked how Perry used that term last night...anyone under 40 had no idea what he meant

Thanks for posting that. I had missed this part of the debate and was looking for a transcript/video of what Newt said that has so many in an uproar.

Can't say I agree with some of it, but do appreciate his explaining how he got to the position he holds.

Food for thought/consideration going forward.

“I do not believe that the people of the United States are going to take people who have been here a quarter century, who have children and grandchildren, who are members of the community, who may have done something 25 years ago, separate them from their families, and expel them.”

The genius Gingrich fails to realize that the only difference between an illegal border crosser caught by the Border Patrol today and the one that’s been here 25 years is that the 25 year guy has been breaking the law 9,125 days longer.

Apparently, a lot of Freepers are of the same mindset. Dig deeper and you will find these same Freepers use illegal workers themselves and/or don't have to put up with the curse of having 20 illegals living next door to them trashing up the neighborhood,
