What he should do is occasionally call the fisheries and report the general location where he saw the last floater.... “a few days ago”.

No, just carry a heavy-duty rod and a Penn 6/0. When he nets one, voila! - a rod and reel catch.

Just don't try and palm off a spinning rod and 6 lb test. :-)
