Obama: 'I Will Veto Any Effort' To Undo Automatic Cuts
national journal ^ | Nobember 21, 2011 | George E. Condon Jr.

Posted on 11/21/2011 3:22:20 PM PST by opentalk

President Obama Monday evening blamed Republicans for the failure of the super committee to meet its deadline for a debt plan and warned that he will veto any attempt to eliminate the automatic spending cuts that go into effect with that failure.

In an appearance in the White House briefing room a little more than an hour after the committee officially conceded failure, the president said his answer to those who want to eliminate those cuts “is simple: No. I will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts to domestic and defense spending. There will be no easy off-ramps on this one.”

He added, “We need to keep the pressure up to compromise, not the turn off the pressure.”

His anger was palpable. It seemed he was actually losing it.

I normally tune him out but today watched him unravel

He skillfully inserted revenue into the argument, and now all we’re hearing is how the republicans refused to raise taxes.

Exactly correct with emphasis on the word "skillfully". This is what a skilled, polished politician can do. He can preside over an economy in shambles, run up previously undreamt of levels of debt, and basically make a complete mess of things, and yet still be doing disturbingly well in the court of public opinion and have a perfectly legitimate chance of winning re-election. As I've said, being right on the issues isn't even half the battle when it comes to getting elected. Human beings are mostly followers and sheep, and a skilled politician can fool them much of the time. We better bring our A game to the 2012 campaign, because Hussein is going to be extremely difficult to beat and will get no less than 45% of the vote - probably more.

You’d better study the period from 1945-1950 and 1976-1980 again, FRiend.

Last summer Obama and the Democrats refused to do anything to solve the crisis and kept blaming the Republicans--with the help of the media a good part of the public believed them. The Republicans agreed to a deal to kick the can down the road to November. Why did they expect anything other than a continuation of the same conduct by Obama and by the Democrats?

The Stupid Party never learns no matter how many times they are double-crossed by the Evil Party. But now Obama can use excessive cuts to the military budget as a crowbar--he can threaten excessive cuts to the defense budget if they don't cave in.

What an ass. Hopefully by the time these cuts are scheduled to go into effect, we will have an actual leader in the WH. So, veto THIS, 0bama.

THis was a setup from the beginning...and I fault Republican leadership for being so stupid as to agree to the idea of a Super committee go forth. What do we do next, have a super-duper committee? Positively ridiculous to have let this happen.

Good point, the only concern is the rest of the world it heating up with Islamic hate against the west, plus recent cyber attacks on our water system, decrease in Navy spending. Will Obama protect us? Is this the time to cut defenses or time to update.

It is my understanding this includes Department of Homeland security's budget. That is a great place to start with cuts.

“just remember, “Cuts” == “Reductions in Rate of INCREASES”

To me that's the real scandal. We are NOT cutting anything. As The One says, “it's me, it's me, it's me, it's all about me.” We are so screwed. The masses don't have a clue. Heck, most fairly informed folks don't have a clue. I talk all the time to friends who are intelligent until it comes to how our government works. Then it's like they have lost their minds. No clue.

I was thinking the same thing. Why does anything have to be done at this time? Why give him the power to veto? Just like Obamacare, this is another of his schemes that can be rolled back in 2013. Am I missing something?

100% inevitable. I still can’t even imagine what Boehner and the Republicans were thinking when they agreed to this “super committee” nonsense. The Stupid Party strikes again.
