The LDS Church is politically neutral, as is MDL. Mormons hold elected office and positions of responsibility in both US political parties and various parties worldwide. When we respond to any issue regarding politics, we do so only to correct misinformation and misperceptions about the Church, not in an effort to promote a particular candidate or party.
Recently, Politico reported that part of President Obamas 2012 reelection campaign strategy will be to portray Mitt Romney, a Mormon and possible Republican presidential nominee, as weird. The Politico report did not specifically tie the weird charge to Romneys Mormon faith, but many commentators have speculated that is the logical application of such a strategy.
Commentators from various political perspectives have also condemned any such strategy. Blogger Jane Hamsher wrote: To preach religious tolerance as Obama does, and then engage in this kind of appeal to religious bigotry, is both hypocritical and pernicious, not to mention self-defeating
As the economy gets worse, people better be really careful about stoking tribalist rage against any minority. Researcher and author Glenn Stanton agreed: Yes, you can be pretty sure that it will be his Mormon faith where most of the weirdness innuendos will land. And this from a president who had to finally and reluctantly distance himself from his own faith heritage. Former presidential speechwriter David Frum noted: The attacks will tiptoe up to the line of outright anti-Mormon bigotry. In Time, political reporter Michael Crowley summed it up: Youd like to think that the people who work for a man who has been slurred countless times because of his race would take a higher road.

An odd argument posted in defense of the pro gay, pro abortion, author of RomneyCare.
>> I would be comfortable with a Mormon President. I just dont think Mitt Romney fits that bill.
+1
It would beat the hell out of the muslim president we already have.
“But the average Mormon is very easily deceived.”
That is a rather “weird” statement. I wonder what you mean by “the average Mormon”. Do you know a lot of Mormons whom you can “easily deceive”? Doubtful. Anyway, this is a sneaky way of insulting us.
We are all weird; everyone one of us.
Pleople who think they are not weird are weird for not thinking they are weird.
This tread is useless.
I’ve noticed a tendency toward passive-aggressiveness.
“It seems to be working quite well around here.”
From most of the posts that I have read, Freepers seem to primarily focus on Romney’s liberal tendencies. Yes there are a few times when posts, or even entire threads get posted about his Mormon religion - but I have always viewed those as things to make fun of a candidate, just like folks make fun of the Obama’s that have nothing to do with the REAL reason they don’t like him. (Not that he would have, but if Reagan threw a ball like a girl or road a sissy bike - we would not have made fun of it like we do with Obama.)
I agree. Mitt Romney's record and political positions are the problem, not his faith. The same with Newt Gingrich, whose religion I share - his record and positions are the problem.
[hint: Think RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE]
“Why do you feel the need to post your personal crusades in Front Page News?”
Rick Perry’s campaign made this front page news.
>> That is absolutely not true.
That absolutely IS true. Not that I disagree with Jim’s position, but he has said it over and over, very clearly. You’re either being disingenuous or willfully blind and stupid.
I see I hit a nerve.
Hello? Where did that come from?
Rick Perry’s campaign - and many other sources - made this “front page news”.
With a touch of masochism and victimhood.
Don’t you remember Rick Perry’s pastor friend calling Mormons a “cult” and saying we’re not Christians which is another way of condemning us all to hell along with the Catholics and Jews? He called us more than just plain “weird”.
You've gone off the rails. What brought this on?
I notice that in your response #8, you
CONVENIENTLY FOR YOU AND ROMNEY, left off the
second part of the missive.
It said,
“If not, then why does not one Mormon criticize Milt Romney?”
That you avoided answering demonstrates that YOU
support lying, backstabbing and dog abuse.
You must be ‘proud’ to be such a deceptive disingenuous
troll.
No insult, just they way it is. The whole LDS doctrine is well proven to be made up. the facts have been laid out especially in the information age. Smith's history alone should be enough for the reasoned mind. But even smart folks can be lead astray. Something about our emotions and religion.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Mittens is a flip-flopping, fabricating, falsehood spewing, political animal who would sell us down the tubes for a smile from Nancy Pelosi or a pat on the head from Harry Reid, but I don’t think his religion has anything to do with his questionable veracity.
