Police Pepper-Spray Seated Protesters At UC Davis [VIDEO]
Business Insider ^ | November 19, 2011 | Henry Blodget

Posted on 11/19/2011 8:29:28 AM PST by Kevin in California

University police tore down tents at UC Davis yesterday afternoon, arresting 8 students in the process, Xeni Jardin of Boing Boing reports. At one point, to clear a path to reach students that they had already arrested, they pepper-sprayed a line of seated, quiet protesters. This video, which shows the pepper-spraying, is going viral. This comment, from venture capitalist Chris Sacca, sums up what lots of people who watch it are thinking: Seriously. Right now. Stop what you are doing, watch this video, and reflect on what it means to be American.

Sad, very sad. Laugh all you want, but remember - when the Tea Party gets sprayed like this, you wont be laughing as much...

Really?

Do you see any difference between the actions of the Tea Party and OWS?

As a prior poster noted, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I agree! But you need to understand that the cops are doing and giving the kids exactly what they want by acting like this.

Cops are doing the equivalent of pouring lighter fluid on a dying fire. They just gave these morons a good 2-3 news cycles all while the media ignores obamas scandals and treason.

Generally I don’t like cops. I admit to that.

Cops have become little more than a unionized quasi-military praetorian guard for the Govt. whose sole function is to protect the edicts of the govt, not the citizens.

Of course the Tea Party is peaceful and does not do crap like this. Who can argue that?

My only thought is that when internal discord and discontent by the population keeps growing under the obama depression and intentional collapse of this country, these type of tacticts will be used on all of us who protest Obama.

Where have you been Glock? The media doesn’t need this incident and others to ignore the Obama scandals and reason. They’ve been ignoring them looooongggggg before OWS.

Given the range of options the police have at their disposal for dealing with people obstructing them..pepper spray seems like one of the least violent and humane.

If you continue to argue like a liberal GTV, expect to get treated like one.

Sad, very sad. Laugh all you want, but remember - when the Tea Party gets sprayed like this, you wont be laughing as much.

The Tea Party has NEVER been sprayed like this EVER. Why? BECAUSE WE OBEY THE LAWS. There have been thousands upon thousands of Tea Parties all across our wonderful land and not ONCE have ANY of us been peppered.

Actually, at every Tea Party I've been to the police seem very relaxed and talkative. Engaging with us. The only trouble they had were when "disruptor's" came in.

We were told before hand NOT to take action into our own hands, but to come and get them, which we did. The police were wonderful enough to remove these idiots and our Tea Party continued on like nothing happened.

To: Logical me

The obvious problem is that they were just sitting there when they were sprayed.

If this were done to us we’d be furious.

It really pains me to see the police give the left something to justifiably scream about.

You cant block the walkway LOL you just hate police no matte what. They have every right to stand to the side and chant or something but to block the police who were called to arrest some protesters is not a right.

The cops’ actions here will only embolden these people and make the situation worse!

Actually, the cops love when a Tea Party comes to their town. They know it will be a relaxing day...except of course when they have to remove the disruptor's.

Other than that, they know they will not come across trouble when we come to town.

And many on this site eat it up like pie since ots being done to the leftists.

If it were the college republicans doing this to protest some issue or whatever - everyone here would be going wild.

its easy to laugh at this when it is people you don’t like - but the cops just gave Obama 3 scandal free, solyndra free, fast n furious free, days in the news media since now we will focus on this.

"That's just not going to happen...the Tea party abides by the law...if they were told to move on by the police they would do so."

Which is exactly what happened on 9/12/09. They made an announcement to clear the street so that emergency personnel can move through freely. Guess what we did. We listened.

We made sure emergency personnel could move freely, if having to, through the streets near the Capitol.

Once the road was cleared, there was a big thank you and we all cheered.

Lock them in the bathroom? Ah... lawsuits for detainment, false arrest, cruel and unusual punishment. Sounds much more severe than pepper spray. That would be an even bigger public relations nightmare.

I don’t think you understand that the people of the campus/community who don’t have any sympathy for this garbage are not going to fall for the tears of these students.

Did you see what the OWS protestors did in Manhattan to SCHOOL CHILDREN?

Did you know that Occupy Denver elected a Border Collie as its leader last week?

In Zuccotti park they have created a health hazard.

In Atlanta they pissed off famed Congressman John Lewis... and haven’t gotten a ton of traction.

Leave them to their own devices, even the punishment of pepper spray, and this falls apart. If you jump up and down about police harassment, something they have triggered to cause a response from John Q. Public who watches the Six O’ Clock news, and ignite a frustrated outrage from America, Obama will be dancing in the Oval Office and use this all throughout 2012 as part of his re-election campaign.

>> The union thugs are the police and they share a mutual beneficial relationship with OWS protestors.

Ironic isn’t it.

As far as I am concerned, the kids who pay tuition at the school should tell the cops to F off and get off the property...

I suspect if you reflect on that statement for a bit, you will realize how foolish it sounds.

I'm curious about whether there are any boundaries to this authority you claim for them.

Should they be able to tell administrators to F#$% off? Teachers? If not, why?

And, it not...why would it be OK to tell cops to F#$% off, campus or otherwise, if called by those same administrators?

Question to critics of the cops in this situation(*): What are the police SUPPOSED to do when protesters disobey LAWFUL orders to disperse, and the protesters are locked in place?

I don’t see any alternative that
1. isn’t MORE violent than some form of mild application of pain, or
2. allows the lawbreakers to continue blocking the thoroughfare.

*— I can’t watch the video. I am making the assumption that the peaceful protesters are in a place they aren’t allowed to be, or at least, are sitting in a WAY that blocks others from peaceful goings and comings.

It’s true the media will probably waste their time on this isolated incident instead of addressing important matters like solyndra. It was silly of the officer to spray them the way he did because it does play into the hands of the OWS that they are victims. Start giving stiffer penalties/consequences and fines and be done with it. The behavior of OWS won’t stop and it’s wasting taxpayer and cops time and money.
