House rejects balanced budget proposal

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have forced Congress to balance its budget every year as a way to reverse years of deficit spending.

A majority of House members supported the balanced budget measure, but supporters fell short of achieving the two-thirds majority needed to amend the Constitution.

Republicans who backed the amendment said it was the only way to get Congress to put its fiscal house in order. Democratic critics said a balanced budget requirement would result in drastic cuts in Medicare and other social programs when economic downturns put the budget out of balance.

More proof there is more work to be done. 2012 is make or break. If it’s not under control after 2012 we are screwed.

Doesn’t matter. We don’t need an amendment to be responsible.

What was the roll-call?

Which Republicans voted against it?
Which Democrats voted for it?

As disappointed as I am with the House Republican majority, they did not “reject” the balanced budget amendment, it PASSED but they need a 2/3 majority to get it enacted. The AP headline is misleading, as is customary for this “news” service.

So these Republicans are saying we can’t trust them without an amendment? They don’t trust themselves?

Notice they don’t say HOW to “balance the budget”. Many of them will cave to tax hikes if it was already law.

Balancing budgets is easy, just raise taxes...

Just sayin....

Why would we expect Congress critters to put real and meaningful limits on vote buying with other people’s money?

The amendment, which needed a two-thirds majority to pass, failed on a vote of 261-165.

Nothing yet on the yeas and nays...

When the economy collapses, all these things will be cut off anyway. Maybe the rats want the economy to fail, so they can implement communism.

That was predictable. Neither party wants a balanced budget amendment, so they’ll always fall Just Shy of the number of votes needed.

The only way it’ll happen is through a Con-Con. Since there hasn’t been one of those since the late 18th century, I’m not holding my breath.
