PSU could raise tuition to cover damages from suits
Friday, November 18, 2011

HARRISBURG — Penn State University and former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky are among those potentially facing millions of dollars in civil lawsuits as the allegations of child sexual abuse against Sandusky continue.

If the university is sued and found civilly liable, students and their families could face higher tuition to offset the damages or settlements. Tuition increased this year because of cuts in state funding.

"When something bad happens, sometimes civil liabilities follow, so it's certainly not out of the question that somebody could sue not just Sandusky, but the school and others," said Jessie Allen, who teaches civil procedure, legal ethics and civil rights at University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

You can’t just raise rates and then assume everyone will pay them. Many will go somewhere else.

What a clever idea. Raise tuition at the same time as less people will feel inclined to make the choice to select this university. Rather than do a general tuition increase, just make ‘Sex Abuse Scandal’ as a line item on the tuition payment form....It will be very interesting to see how the rate of applications shapes up over the coming year.

Mommy and daddy will continue to pay the bills for their little tykes tuition as usual.

But taxpayers will be footing a lot of the bill to that comedy college through all of the federal and state grants that they receive.

Rape the kids for their own good!

What a lesson to teach them in life. Its their fault Penn State is on the hook!

Its never the fault of those who looked the other way while criminal behavior was tolerated in their institution. They are not the ones who’ll have to pay the price for their malfeasance.

The innocent always get stuck with the tab. Its the way of the world.

One of the articles on the Penn State situation posited that this crisis would burst the education bubble. So, they raise prices, presumably above the going market rate. Since college credits mostly don’t transfer to other colleges at the 1 to 1 rate those students who can afford to will remain until they finish their degree. But others will go to cheaper alternatives and enrolment will drop; prompting new rate increases; prompting fewer students to attend.

Why should the architecture and engineering students pay for the school’s failure to deal with the scandal when it was still small back in the ‘90’s? (As for students in Women’s Studies, Russian Art Literature, I don’t care what happens to them and they don’t care what their degree’s cost.)

Ask Duke parents. Their tuition continues to rise despite massive lawsuits. Duke hasn’t even fired the 80 plus professors who convicted the three kids before they had any facts.

PSU returned over $25 million to the univewrsity from its football program...though much of that goes to fund all the other athletic teams..not sure how much is returned tot he general university fund..but that can be the source of the settlement funds...

There shouldn't be a trial..it will be painful to the victis, and the university..Once all the victims have been identified..let's say there's 15..for arguments sake..the university should offer a lump sump..say $50 mill...and let the court allocate the funds..this will eliminate the 35% that the lawyers get..they can bill for hours..

Just so they don’t raise it retroactively to those who graduated when this sordid man was stalking the locker rooms, bringing boy-dates to Bowl games, and being ignored by the football establishment!

Now, how many solid PA citizens are willing to add a sin tax to Junior’s tuition bill? Especially if Sandusky and his enablers still walk fre?

The article stated that PSU could raise tuition. It didn't say they would or even might. Just another article to rev up the people and get everyone's shorts in a knot. It seems to have worked here...
