Moscow fleshes out “Eurasian Union” plans

Experts close to the Kremlin have put some flesh on a recent project of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to create a "Eurasian Union" made up of Russia and other post-Soviet states.

Putin, who is expected to again become Russia's president next year, outlined his geopolitical ambitions, according to a report in the daily Izvestia.

A round table in Moscow, organized by the ruling United Russia part, put flesh on those ideas, the Russian media reported today (17 October).

Apart from countries of the former USSR, the "Eurasian Union" should bring together nations that are historically or culturally close to Russia and that are "loyal to Russia's interests", the experts said.

Russian political scientist Dmitry Orlov indicated that those countries should include Finland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Mongolia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, as well as two countries not in either Europe or Asia, Cuba and Venezuela. …

Meksat Kunakunov, counselor to the president of the parliament of Kyrgyzstan, quoted Putin as saying: "Whoever doesn't regret the USSR has no heart. Whoever dreams of bringing back the USSR has no brains". And he added on his own behalf: "Whoever doubts that we will create a new union is just a fool".

Um yeah right, Pooty-poot. Talking out of both sides of your mouth again? You called the fall of the USSR the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the (20th) Century”, so you must have no heart and no brains what with designing your new Eurasian Union in its image. With all due respect, that is.

Uhh...the Czechs like selling Skodas in Russia.

But they have no interest in being dominated by them ever again...that was strictly an arfitact of WWII.

And they all remember Jan Masaryk.

Yeah? Japan likes selling Toyotas in Russia too.

But they have no interest in being dominated by them ever again
They'd better listen to their president Vaclav Klaus then. It seems like they're being forced to choose between Russia and Germany again.

It looks like this is the reason Pooty came out of retirement, namely, to bring about a de facto Soviet Union, Castro and all.

Time to dust off the old “duck and cover?”

Russians never sought to preserve the Soviet Union by force. But they have always lamented its passing. No one in Russia dreams of reviving the USSR but yes - some closer union of ex-Soviet states is inevitable.

Hardly. The Eurasian Union will be a formidable rival to the EU.

In 20 years, we will see whether Europe ends at the Urals or whether it stretches to the Pacific.

But Europe has to resolve its economic problems first before that can happen.

"Soviets" certainly did—meaning people like Putin. Remember the false demonym "Soviet People"?

No one in Russia dreams of reviving the USSR
Don't say "no one". The same thing under a different name is still the same thing.

Russia is the largest country in the world even after the Soviet collapse. It will play a leading role in Europe now that Europe is broke. Russian leaders have been fiscally responsible and that is why to Russia’s neighbors, this Union is an attractive proposition. Its not based on imperialism or force bur on common interests. The Russian Empire cannot be recreated. Russia has neither the desire nor the strength to play colonial politics. With its strong economy, it can now wield influence by other means and they are certainly considerable.

And how is the Soviet Union going to be resurrected when the new union based on a free market economy and open trade? No one is talking of going back to the days of Communism, of rationing, of closed borders and isolation from the rest of the world. Socialism has no future anywhere on this planet.

And how is the Soviet Union going to be resurrected when the new union based on a free market economy and open trade?
Now just what do you think you're saying . . . ?? Mr. Re-Centralization and Mr. Kick-Out-The-USA, for open trade and free market? Shirley you jest, yes? That's like thinking that the EU is for a free market, when their treaties clearly state that the EU's market is a social market economy.

No one is talking of going back to the days of Communism
No, they're talking about going back to the days of imperialism. And it's looking more fascistic than communistic over there.

Socialism has no future anywhere on this planet
That's not what Pooty-poot or the elites in the EU think. You need to listen to what they're saying.

Europe is not really broke. The dictating country (Germany) is bullying its vassal countries to conform to the impossible-to-conform-to Stability And Growth Pact and its draconian requirement to hold debt spending down to 3 percent of GDP. (Hypocritical Germany has kept their debt spending at 6 percent of GDP.)

And for those that know history, any semblance of cooperation between Germany and Russia (and there's been a lot of that out in the open lately) means that either one or both countries is planning for war once again.

The Russian Empire cannot be recreated. Russia has neither the desire nor the strength to play colonial politics
Oh, thy trollface peeketh out.

The EU has spent itself into bankruptcy.

Its a lesson for Russia and its potential partners in what not to do.

The truth is whether its managed from Brussels or Moscow - coerced integration won’t work.

We’ll see how long the EU Commissar appointed regimes in Athens and Rome last.

Imperialism died with with the unnatural division of Europe that ended in 1989. It would be a fool’s dream to restore it from either end of the European Continent.
