Herman Cain has gotten the protection of Secret Service agents, apparently effective today, sources told POLITICO earlier today.

It's unusual for candidates to get such protection prior to receiving the nomination, unless there is a credible threat of some kind.
UPDATE: “We are protecting Herman Cain,” Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said Thursday night. He said the decision was made by Homeland Security “Secretary Napolitano, at the request of the Cain campaign and in consultation with the Congressional advisory committee.”
“The authority was given to the Service to protect Herman Cain [beginning] today,” Donovan said.

Better spent bucks than a dead candidate. Requests like this aren't granted without due consideration and evidence that it's needed.
So for Cain it's a waste of money while for Palin it'd be a prudent use of government funds?
She was never a declared candidate. Under those circumstances, Palin is no more entitled to Secret Service protection than any other private citizen.

The loony left does not hesitate to use violence when they want to, so it is probably a good idea for Cain to receive this protection.

If there is a credible threat I would certainly want him protected, but I thought being nominated triggered SS protection. He has not been nominated.

Think it was over a scuffle with his body guard and the media. So, who is left without any protection? Bachmann has some from the state police, Perry has state protection...not sure ...IF Cain wins..we will have to keep him escorted around in a brinks truck....

As I listened to Rush on WABC out of NY today, they played a recent clip of Cain at the top of their news hour, blasting the Wall Street protesters for trying to bring down our capitalist system and trying to destroy the greatest nation on earth. So it may be one those loons threatening him.
Herman is most likely getting all kinds of death threats.
