Mayor Ravenstahl calls for Franco Harris to quit as Pittsburgh Promise board chairman
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 11/17/2011 | Jill King Greenwood

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl initiated the call for Steeler great Franco Harris to step down as chair of the board of the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program, the mayor's spokeswoman said.

In a letter he sent to Harris and board members last night, Ravenstahl said Harris showed "callous disregard and indifference for the victims of child sex abuse at Penn State" after Harris spoke out in support of fired coach Joe Paterno.

Harris did not return several phone messages and it wasn't immediately known if he plans to step down from the Pittsburgh Promise board.

Harris, who played for Paterno from 1969-71, criticized the Penn State Board of Trustees last week for firing Paterno, who has not been charged with any crimes. Paterno and Penn State President Graham Spanier were ousted last week amid a scandal in which former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse.

"I feel that the board made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go. I am very disappointed in their position. I thought they showed no courage not to back someone who really needed it at the time . . . . that is very disturbing to me," Harris said last week.

Some incidents are alleged to have occurred inside the Lasch Building, which houses the football facilities on Penn State's University Park campus, after Sandusky's 1999 retirement.

I think I will ask for him to be barred for life

If he's kicked out of a saloon, wouldn't that be DIS-BARRED?

For sure Franco is acting stupid with all of this babbling unqualified support for JoePa. But with all the firings you’d think he had been the one who was out there abusing kids.

They’re both idiots when it comes to politics.

As a founding member of Franco's Italian Army and a guy that has known Franco since 1972, he is a great guy but a real butt hole liberal.

Could never understand how Franco became such a lefty; he wouldn't even support Lynn Swann, a fellow 4 time Steeler SuperBowl winner, a few years ago when Swann was running for gubernator of PA.

Franco backed that fat, dirty, greasy, slimy, crooked, POS ed, edd and eddy rendell.

The fact that he is voicing his opinion with no regard to how it affects his reputation has made him earn some respect from me.

Indeed...we should all, like Franco, offer support to those who protected and abetted a serial child rapist for years. /sarc

Your endorsement of reckless stupidity is noted.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl initiated the call for Steeler great Franco Harris to step down as chair of the board of the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program, the mayor's spokeswoman said.

I would guess by this statement alone that Ravenstahl is a Democrat with a seriously disordered mind. Many, many people believe that the university acted prematurely in firing JoePa. It is so easy to sanctimoniously prejudge people.

Lets just wait and see what develops, and not punish people for exercising their right to their opinion.

Read the grand jury indictment. And what do you make of JoePa's statement the other day: "I should have done more." Something an innocent man says?

Open your eyes...and let me repeat: child rape is one of THE most horrendous crimes possible. Still support Sandusky and JoePa?

Day 48 Of The FReepathon
Do you Know Why?

There are loyal posters that donate every FReepathon. Some donate several times during every 'thon. But others never donate. Why?

1 My enemies haven't been zotted.
2 The owner doesn't support my candidate.
3 FR won't "upgrade" to "Like" buttons and blinky crap.
4 Someone else will donate.
5 My friend was zotted.
6 I lost my job and have no income.

Only one of those is a legitimate reason.

Support It Or Lose It

PSU didn’t act prematurely in firing Paterno. They acted proactively.

I believe the strategy is this: Give the mob the head of the living god, rend our garments, gnash our teeth and say “Whaddaya want? We gave you PATERNO for Chrissakes! now go away! (And don’t look under any more rocks for the millionaire boosters, prominent ccommunity members and faculty who shared in Coach Sandusky’s bounty of fresh young boys.)”

He’s a sacrifice, a diversion, a juicy steak thrown in front of the baying hounds offered up in the hope that no one will look any deeper into the scandal and rot.

That having been said, JoePa KNEW and still deserves to be (at least) fired. This is one HUGH and SERIES awsh*t that does indeed wipe out a lifetime of attaboys.

Sorry.

Who the hell said I was supporting Sandusky and Paterno??......I was supporting the right of any American to express his opinion on a controversial subject without retribution from guys like you. Who made you the arbitrator of what is accepted speech?? And, frankly, who made you the judge and jury in this case?? Do I need to remind you that Paterno AND SANDUSKY are innocent until proven guilty?? No matter how heinous the alleged crime. Evidently I do!

Innocent IN A COURT OF LAW until proven guilty. I have looked at the available facts and my considered opinion is that 1) Sandusky is indeed a pedophile who used the facilities and the (formerly) good name of Penn State football to lure pre-adolescent boys into a relationship where he molested many and raped some; 2) That Paterno--no later than 2002 and probably much earlier--KNEW about this and protected him.

The facts as so far presented bear this out. I am entitled to my opinion as stated as you are to yours. But, you and Franco are supporting a person who abetted child rape based on what we know.

So...you never had an opinion about OJ? Or Bill Clinton until the courts spoke?

Please...

Still support Sandusky and JoePa?

I never followed college football. I couldn't have told you if Joe Paterno was even still alive or where he coached until 1 month ago.

From my view, Franco Harris is several layers of people and 25 years removed from this scandal, and he loses a job because he voices support to a coach who was kind to him 40 years ago?? Its become silly. This scandal has moved well beyond investigating a sick homosexual pederast into a high-voltage mob-frenzy.

And you are entitled to your "considered opinion" just like I am. But what you are NOT entitled to is to call for retribution and punishment of someone like Franco for expressing their opinion. That's the issue I raised in my original post, not whether the accused were guilty or not.

I don't cotton to the kind of mob rule and emotional rush to judgement to shut people up that you are practicing. THAT WAS MY POINT!!

Maybe you should put down your torch and read the story. Or is that too much to ask of a mob member in full cry? I fully expect you to accuse me of condoning pedophilia next. Think of something else to lie about.
