CARROLL As he surged to the top of two national polls Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich spent nearly three hours at the Santa Maria Winery in Carroll on Monday, speaking with voters, taking questions, signing books and screening a movie he co-developed celebrating Pope John Paul II.
Gingrich also conducted a 10-minute interview with The Carroll Daily Times Herald and La Prensa, an Iowa Spanish-language newspaper, before going on air nationally with Fox News Sean Hannity from a makeshift, temporary studio...
....La Prensa asked Gingrichs reaction to an often-repeated line from Cain about constructing a border fence with Mexico so that it can electrocute immigrants, and possibly even snare them in an associated moat stocked with alligators.
It was a bad idea, Gingrich said.
He added, I hope he was joking. Id like to think he was joking.
Gingrich then turned to his own immigration plans, calling for control of the border in a way that is human and practical.
Im working on an immigration program which is firm but at the same time has a human aspect to it that I think most Hispanic Americans would appreciate, Gingrich said.
Earlier, in a question-and-answer session with voters in the winery, Gingrich said he wanted to impose severe penalties for employers who hired undocumented workers. Moreover, he put forward a plan modeled on the Selective Service System used by the military in World War II in which local committees of citizens could help determine the immigration status of a citys illegal residents based on factors like how long theyve lived in the area, family roots and contributions socially and in business.
Gingrich said rhetoric about deporting all illegal immigrants isnt realistic.
I think its very unlikely the American people are going to break up families, Gingrich said...

The idea of everify is good. If there are problems in implementation, those can be worked on. There is no reason it should be a burden on employers. Why should it be any less effective than the NICS system for gun purchases? And using it could be an absolute defense for business owners if all their employees pass.
You know I am more or less a Perry supporter, but the truth is a lot of Pubs, including IMHO Perry, really resist any real enforcement of laws agaisnt employing illegals because a lot of their support comes from businesses that rely on illegals. That’s no longer a viable position, and it’s likely going to cost Perry the election.
Immediate:
Short-term (first six months):
Long-term:
And none of that SEAL the border. Take away jobs through e-verify and laws like Georgia nad ALabama have instituted and suddenly folks go home. What a shock. I still am not voting for Perry
With all of Newt’s faults he is 1000 times better than Romney.
Yeah Palin would of been the best...I even like Bachman.
So true and besides he is so yesterday with baggage so heavy that no airline will allow even in its undercarriage.
A “leader” that talks like Newt is surrendering to the problem. And he’s encouraging more of it.
The message heard loud and clear outside the border is that Americans are too weak to enforce the law.
That Americans are afraid of hurting the feelings of non-citizens who choose to ignore the law and who create problems for their own children.
We in southern California are directly impacted by the flood of illegals that fools like Newt and Dubya have rewarded for years. The old middle class of California has been replaced by a new imported peasant class, and despite the idiocy coming out of certain Republican quarters they aren’t “natural conservatives”.
Eisenhower was confronted with the same problem when I was a boy and he had the fortitude to tackle it head on.
But then Ike knew which country he belonged to, and it wasn’t Mexico. Ike wasn’t afraid of the press like this current crop of sycophantic GOP losers.
It has already probably cost Perry the nomination. Too many Texans jump to his defense by making ludicrous claims that somehow they are different and the rest of us just don't understand their special status.
Well, the rest of us are chipping in taxes to support social services for their cheap labor and seeing congressional representation being taken away to award them extra electoral weight for their cheap labor. And we're fed up with it.
Bah hum bug. I knew I messed that up =(.

This is a strawman argument. We don't need to force them out, we just need to stop enticing them in, and stop rewarding them for being here. If they came for work, but find that there is no more work for illegal aliens, they will leave on the same two feet that brought them here.
see Chinese Immigrants Are Fleeing Back To China Because 'The American Dream Is Dead' for how this incentive would work.
So what you propose are exactly what we did all over the country before the early 1960’s and the federal government “took over” and destroyed this type of enforcement.
I’d say 80-90% of the crap we have to deal with today are from stupid things the feds have done since 1964 on so can be changed.
For example, most of the cabinet departments were created in the 70’s like Education and Energy and have failed in their mission and need to be destroyed.
Like I said, I don't know the context of his thoughts there. BUT, I do agree we can't deport them ALL.
And that's what I replied to. Words mean things....and ALL means ALL.
Can't imagine that Newt is cowed by the press...at present.
FWIW-
If it's Mitt and, god forbid, he wins then I predict the following four years on FR will be us writing "Mitt did what? Oh geez, not this moderate left wing crap again"!
I know that is a common belief but it is inaccurate.
Donors to Bush absent for Perry WASHINGTON Fewer than one in 10 of the top fundraisers who helped George W. Bush shatter records for presidential campaign money in 2000 and 2004 have donated to Texas Gov. Rick Perrys 2012 presidential campaign, a Houston Chronicle analysis of Federal Election Commission data has found.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney holds a wide lead over other GOP presidential hopefuls in donations received from the 939 Pioneers and Rangers who raised at least $100,000 each for the Bush presidential efforts.
*******************
Disclosure reports show that neither Bob Perry nor his wife have donated to Rick Perry's presidential bid. Bob Perry has given money to other candidates but not to Rick Perry. The biggest recipient is Mitt Romney. Bob Perry and his wife gave a combined $5,000 to Romney's early this year and $500,000 to the super PAC Restore Our Future that supports Romney.
In 2008, they supported Romney's nomination with a $5,000 donation between them. According to disclosure reports Gov Tim Pawlenty received a combined $10,000 to his presidential campaign and another $60,000 to his political action committee from Bob Perry and his wife. Bob Perry is also the top donor to the Karl Rove-linked super PAC American Crossroads
**********************
Establishment GOP is not behind Gov. Perry. Rove-Bush-Hutchison ran a primary challenge against him in 2010 -- Perry was behind Hutchison by 20 points -- beat her on election day by 20 points. Now she and other, dare I say RINOs, have very publicly stated that they will not endorse Perry.
And the feminists, the trial lawyers, environmentalists and teachers unions have stated that they have Rick Perry in their cross-hairs and will do everything to keep him from being elected. They say that because he has taken it out of their hides here in Texas and he will take an even bigger hunk out of their hides when he's in the White House --- and they KNOW it.
Gingrich sells books and DVDs at every stop, including his wife’s children’s book.
You’re missing a picture of Gingrich with Al Sharpton on their “Education Tour” to promote Obama’s education policies.
