...Yes, thats a hell of a lot of baggage. So, what separates Gingrich from Romney? Two elements: first, Gingrich has distanced himself from all of that baggage by apologizing for it. Second, Gingrichs liberal leanings have all been out of office, while Romneys liberal leanings were all in office. When Gingrich was actually in a position of power, he was perhaps the most conservative Speaker of the House in American history. The Republican Revolution of 1994 was his baby. Welfare reform was his baby. The booming Clinton economy? That could be more accurately attributed to Gingrich. On foreign policy, Newt has never wavered he has always been a hawk. Down deep, Newt is a conservative. Romney is not. The proof is in the pudding rather than the posturing...

The question remains, which Newt are we really voting for?
Did you even bother to read the article?
Or, to paraphrase the immortal words of Rick Perry, “we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see which Newt Gingrich we’re talking to today”.
(But I’m voting for Newt anyway.)
Gingrich 2012!
Because having stood in line on the GOP plantation talking for 40+ years is way more important then leadership skills and conservative principals.
I think that’s a reasonably fair article. I still won’t vote for Newt as I think he is just a “bad” human being and has WAY too many RINO qualities for me. But I do think this is fairly objective. Thanks for the post.
And the question I asked is raised again, but still not answered, by this article.
It’s frustrating that we can’t seem to find a candidate that is truly worthy of our support. There are problems with all of them.
Perry was supposed to be the savior but then dissapointed us badly. Cain still seems pretty solid, but does seem somewhat like an amateur. Gingrich is very intelligent and articulate, but has compromised too much in the past and doesn’t seem to hold to conservative principles.
It’ll be interesting to see how the primaries play out.
I did not read the article, I’m at work at the moment. In regards to Newt versus Romney, I’ll take Newt.. Newt vs Cain, I’ll take Newt.. Perry and Cain have both disqualified themselves, in my opinion due to not being prepared for interviews, poor debate performances, and both have had disastrous melt-downs on camera and on interview tape.
Looks like Newt for me. He will have to do.
Newt is just one of those people that can do and say things that are plainly inexplicable. He is obviously very smart, and an incredible historian. He is also obviously conservative, for the most part. But sometimes he just does and says things that worry me, because I don’t understand it.
Gingrichs liberal leanings have all been out of office....

Well there ya go, then. That settles it. Newtie’s my man!
/sarc
They can keep trying to manipulate us to vote for a rino, fake polls, Drama over pauses, Drama over Axelrod hit attempts. But we are still going with Cain by default. Too much at stake for more of the same to continue.
That’s what scares me....I’m not ready to say “I’ll take Newt” because he has supported the individual mandate for health insurance at the federal level very recently. If we all want to get rid of Obamacare but Newt basically supports it, then why would we want to nominate him?
He also denounced Ryan’s budget plan and supports man-made global warming. He’s very smart, but I don’t know if I can trust him to follow conservative priniciples.
newt apologized for calling limited amnesty?
apologized for Global Warming scaremongering?
apologized for attacking Ryan’s plan as “right-wing social engineering”
Well, that settles it. Now I’m not worried about those anymore.
At some point it may come down to Newt or Mitt. I think we all know who we are going to pick.
It may not come down to those 2 so we should still scrutinize the candidates until we have the last couple standing.
Unfortunately, Newt is a congenital liar. And his RINO propensities have been showing themselves recently as well as way back when.
As for being conservative while in office, that’s not true, either. He started out strong, with a strong electoral mandate. But clinton faced him down, and by the time he left office Newt was pretty well doing whatever clinton wanted, including caving in on issues like abortion as well as spending.
He’s an operative who just cannot be trusted. If the choice boils down to Newt or Mitt, as this guru pretends, then we are in serious trouble and will need to think about voting for a write-in or something.
With all the people here that suddenly are embracing Newt, it is giving me a lot of concern about what’s going to happen once it’s clear Romney is going to be the nominee. Will all of these people who said, “Never Romney” start berating those of us who will stick by that, and proclaim we must vote for Romney?
Dark days are ahead.
I think Ben suffers from having not been there. Newt is not the person he is describing
The fact remains that Newt ACTUALLY BALANCED THE US FEDERAL BUDGET
Forcing Bill Clinton into doing it
That says a lot.
