Has it really come to this? Newt Gingrich as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney? That's what many in the punditocracy have proclaimed as the former speaker of the House has surged recently in the polls.
Yet a look at his record reveals that Newt is hardly the "anti-Mitt" -- he's Mitt Romney with more baggage and bolder hand gestures.
Every Gingrich profile proclaims that he's a dazzling "ideas man," a "one-man think tank." It seems that, if you clamor long enough about "big ideas," people become convinced you actually have them.
But most of Gingrich's policy ideas over the last decade have been tepidly conventional and consistent with the Big Government, Beltway Consensus.
Gingrich's campaign nearly imploded this summer when he dismissed Rep. Paul Ryan's, R-Wis., Medicare reform plan as "right-wing social engineering." But that gaffe was a window into Gingrich's irresponsible approach toward entitlements.
In 2003, Gingrich stumped hard for President George W. Bush's prescription drug bill, which has added about $17 trillion to Medicare's unfunded liabilities. "Every conservative member of Congress should vote for this Medicare bill," Newt urged.
And in his 2008 book "Real Change," he endorsed an individual mandate for health insurance.

Newt is hated, and is hated with passion, by more Democrats and Independents than any other Republican candidate.
More people hate Newt than Palin.
And they said that made Palin unelectable.
Look.....I graduated from West Georgia College in 1974 and knew Newt quite well as he was my girlfriend’s faculty adviser.
It was because of him that I am no longer a Democrat and I don’t care what ‘baggage’ you find by quoting his opponents.
I have read his books.
I know his mind.
Go sell it somewhere else.
The idea is to beat Obama if I'm not mistaken...
I’d like to know what moves Newt has made to step back from some of these things. I’m saying this as a person who is open to voting for him but feeling like I can’t trust him.
Has he commented on his sitting next to Pelosi and talking about government moves on Climate Change?
How about some of these other things, addressed any of them since?
“Only Sen Rick and MB are conservative.”
They are truly the most conservative of all the GOP presidential candidates.
WAKE UP AMERICA!
You might want to listen to a clip of Santorum’s interview on Monday with Laura Ingraham:
Michele Bachmann is the conservative candidate.
ABO
I suspect most republican Prez. candidates are “ringers”.. Yes.. Cain too..
The only one I’m fairly sure of is Michele Bachmann....
Romney being better than Obama is suspiciously like Bush is better than Al Gore.. or Francois Kerry..
America might be screwed.. cause we have some really good Propagandists..
The Clintoons to the Bushes to the MaO-bamas is pure stagecraft..
Very much like Kabuki Theater.. with strange noises, makeup, masks, the whole nine/nine/nine yards..
There is this...
Bachmann
Cain
Perry
Newt
Newt has a record with things like supporting the expansion of Medicare under Bush. He’s no conservative.
And I will take Cain on the sex scandal department. What Cain is accused of isn’t half as bad as what Gingrich did.
Cheats on wife #1, divorces her. Cheats on wife #2, divorces her. Both were sick.
When you combine the liberal record, the awful personal conduct, and the fact that he’s hated by Dems and Indies alike, he shouldn’t be the nominee.
He is well known. The most well known of all the candidates. Which does give him some advantages. I’m not going to say he couldn’t win the nomination.
Typically the guy who would win the title “Mr. Republican” is the nominee. The guy who gets the gold watch. The guy who gets the Lifetime Achievement award.
Last time it was McCain. This time it could be Gingrich.
Thompson was the Conservative frontrunner for a while. Was McCains buddy. Pretty much gave his support to McCain.
Same as this time. Cain was the Conservative frontrunner for a while. I guess he still is. Cain and Newt went off by themselves to have their own debate. They’re buddies. Cain is working to move his support to Newt, much in the same way as Fred gave his support to McCain. Cain is now a blocker.
You were born quite recently, right?
Bingo!
Putin is more conservative than Obama.
The Chinese PM is more Conservative than Obama.
Both have warned Obama about his expanding welfare state.
Did you see Cain talking about Libya?
He could not explain one specific thing that he would’ve done differently than Obama.
Obama is the most Liberal Democrat President we’ve ever had. A Leftist. A Marxist.
Cain agreed with Obama 100%.
What is Cain’s Foreign Policy? He agrees with the Liberal 100%.
Newt sets the record straight on the mandate lie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEmh3s32Gfw&feature=relmfuhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXSrVg6OKiU&feature=related

Yep. No baggage either.
Michele Bachmann I don’t think is part of the Global Elite.
Unless it’s a really really deep undercover operation.
Let’s put it this way, when Michele Bachmann ran for office the first time, in 1999, for school board, if she was global elite, she would’ve won. Her first 40-45 years are completely devoid of elite credentials.
And if you don’t like elites, having no elite credentials is a good thing.
Maybe it’s time to look at her again? 2 of the top 5 have gotten seriously hurt recently. Let’s stop pretending that a seriously flawed candidate (Newt) is the only option other than the unacceptably RINO Romney.
What was wrong with Santorum again? And compare that to Newt.
It was easy to just say “Rick is unacceptable”, because the other candidates hadn’t crumbled into rubble.
We threw Rick in there just like we threw Newt in there. The unacceptable pile. We threw them in there when we thought Palin would run. They got in early, we thought it was going to be Palin and we quickly just said “nah” to both Newt and Santorum.
I’d like to see a head to head, pros and cons, Santorum vs Gingrich.
Ya know, when you, yes you, try to judge Newt Gingrich as a filthy sinner not worthy of your righteousness, you might want to not then lie about Herman Cain in your next post.
Is there any current GOP candidate that feel is good?
