CBS News/NJ GOP Debate: Winners and Losers [Videos, Transcripts, Fact Checks]

The CBS News/National Journal debate Saturday night was the first to focus on foreign policy, and it generated fewer fireworks - but more substance - than many of its predecessors. For that reason we aren't going to simply list winners and losers this time around and instead discuss the candidates' performances - though we're still putting those we thought did best at the top.

Mitt Romney: Romney has been better than his rivals in presidential debates so often that it's gotten to the point where a strong performance - as he had in this debate - feels almost ho-hum.
Romney, Gingrich at GOP debate: We'd go to war to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons

Newt Gingrich: For one of the most substantive debates of the campaign, Gingrich's depth and command of the issues allowed the former speaker to shine.
Gingrich, Romney back Obama killing American accused of turning on U.S.

Ron Paul: Paul is able to provide the biggest contrast...to U.S. military intervention abroad..he sees as civil liberties violations against U.S. citizens..called it "immoral,

Rick Perry: Perry exceeded expectations. He touted his military service and spoke passionately on counter-terrorism in way that would appeal to foreign policy hawks. And perhaps even more importantly, his performance was free of the gaffes that he's become known for in debates. Perry:My foreign aid budget starts at zero.

Michele Bachmann: Bachmann came to the debate prepared. She sounded well-versed on the ongoing war in Afghanistan and gave specific responses with respect to how she'd handle the war.

Rick Santorum: Santorum didn't get as many questions as the more popular candidates in the polls, but when he did get a chance to talk, his remarks sounded thoughtful and measured.

Jon Huntsman: The former ambassador to China didn't get to say much, but when he did he was able to articulate his vision clearly.

[And Candidate CBS Is Last To Make List, as "placed the best at the top"] Herman Cain: Cain came into this debate having shown almost no knowledge on foreign policy issues, and the fact that he got through all 90 minutes without any serious gaffes has to be considered something of an accomplishment. Added Analysis: Cain held his own, but answers didn't show depth.

Romney managed to be hawkish on issues like Iran while also leaving himself a little breathing room, playing to a Republican base that still views him skeptically.

Today it's flip, tomorrow it's flop.

What a disgusting pile of political dribble he is.

And the MSM pounds on Perry for just losing track of his words.

They are still living the dream that the base will support Romney.

CBS is so obvious with their backhanded compliments.

Why would conservatives even bother giving them the time of day?

Any candidate that denied the possibility of the US attacking Iran is telling the enemy ahead of time what they will and won’t do. That is no different than Obama telling the Taliban that he’s leaving Afghanistan on a particular date.

Romney was a gay rights advocate. That's an international language for the elites.

Perry’s taken a lot of grief for talking to the Mexican Presidents and Governors.

Almost any Governor will have some experience with trade and with the National Guard. They will also have met with foreign leaders in their official capacity.

If I had to pick today it would be Cain.

We've got a long ways to go, anything can happen before it's show time....anyone but Mitt, Paul or Hunstman!

Note: what was important in this CBS analysis is that they placed Cain last in their report of placing the best on top..and in the photo[s] below {I just included}, they blurred ONLY CAIN as focus went to the others in the frame.

Sometimes its not what's written or CBS says, but the message is in the photos chosen.

They had fun with it, as I did in adding my own comments.

But in Summary, CBS placed Herman Cain last-bottom of the pack in the editorial, and they blurred his image.

CBS:We aren't going to simply list winners and losers this time around and instead discuss the candidates' performances...though we're still putting those we thought did best at the top." [..although it marks the loser as Herman Cain]

Did Cain's performance deserve last place?

Perry has close, personal ties with Mexico and Romney buys his hair gel by the boatload from China.

baloney - I watched 3/4 of the thing and Cain did okay. Bachman did very well. Newt and Romney did okay; Perry and Cain did about the same, but I do not believe Perry. I am not sure he knows why he is running, whereas I believe Cain is running for the love of his country. But Bachman was the most knowledgeable and articulate(and I don't much like her). Huntsman: please quit. Santorum - wait four more years.
