Taking a page from Ronald Reagan, Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Saturday sought to use humor to rebound from his much-noted debate flub earlier in the week. That flub, a 53-second brain freeze that was replayed endlessly on news shows, had him forgetting the name of the Department of Energy, the third federal agency he pledges to eliminate.
So Perry was quick to cut off CBS Scott Pelley, one of the debate moderators in South Carolina, when he began a question, saying, Governor Perry, you advocate the elimination of the Department of Energy. If you eliminate the Department of Energy...
I'm glad you remembered it, interjected Perry with a big smile as the audience broke into applause and laughter. Pelley responded, I've had some time to think about it, sir. And Perry shot back again to even more laughter, Me, too.
Far from being uptight after his earlier stumble, Perry was loose even before the debate. Backstage before the TV lights came on, Perry said to fellow candidate Rick Santorum, So tonight if I need a lifeline, I'm just gonna look to you, OK?
Santorum laughed and offered to fill in the blanks for the Texan. The two men then high-fived each other. At that point, they laughed about Rep. Ron Paul telling Perry after the Michigan debate that everybody has that happen, most people just don't do it in front of four million people. In South Carolina, Paul laughed and told Santorum, I was trying to make him feel better.
Perrys use of humor was reminiscent of Reagans rebound in 1984 after the then-president's performance in that year's first presidential debate with Democratic nominee Walter F. Mondale raised questions about whether age had dulled Reagan's mental quickness. At the second debate, Reagan was ready when he question came up. I will not make age an issue in this campaign," he said. "I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience. The lasting image from that debate is Mondale laughing heartily at the joke at his expense. And the question of Reagans age was put to rest for the campaign.
Altura, you are so right, I agree with you.
Thanks for the private story regarding a political candidate. All we normally get is the MSM spin!
Perry has been debating Obama for 3 years.
Now, that is the Rick Perry that I know and love. I don’t know why so many people, including some on FR, are so set on crucifying him and saying things about him that are totally not true. He will make a great president.

Whatever!!!
Obama’s attack on TX has hurt all of us...and you know it! The latest...the pipeline...is just one thing!
Haha! Funny ... :o-)
Who is Varina Davis?
I like him. I’m hoping he wins. But admit most Freepers don’t like him.
Regarding pluralism: Christians can’t be pluralistic, but we can appreciated it when Muslims try to be.
It is good to see atheists and followers of other religions speak and act truthfully, because truth will win and one lump of truth can leaven the whole batch. They show that the Word of God is written on their hearts.
Rom 2:13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
Rom 2:14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.
Rom 2:15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them
Rom 2:16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. (ESV, E-Sword)
You keep making the “unsubstantiated” accusation that Rick Perry raised Federal campaign funds before he entered the race. Do you have proof?
Several things I don’t like about Rick Perry, but that applies to all the candidates. This is a true indication of the man’s substance. The age-old “actions speak louder than words”, rings true again.
He doesn't. He just throws things up against the wall and hopes they stick.
There are some people who will believe anything they read and those are the ones he's trying to rope in.
(I think Liz is a guy...LOL)
What heart-warming stories! Rick is a real deal... warts, brain farts and all. There just may be an upset in the working. Stay tuned. :)
Thanks for sharing these great stories about Gov. Perry. I know that he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but he is a good man and one who respects and cares about his sister and brother veterans.
Sure, he may have forgotten the name of one of the sixty bazillion government agencies, but he never forgets his fellow veterans. That’s a huge plus in my book!! I’ll support a veteran in a heartbeat!! We know what the jaws of hell look like because we’ve all been there!
Hear, hear!! That is my one and ONLY criteria for selecting the candidate I will support. Show me what he/she has DONE, don't TELL me what he/she said!!!
The emotional nature of the rants, without any “substantiation,” make me think female. You and I - and a lot of FReeper women - are more likely to use facts and sources, but it’s still a female trait to use emotions and feelings when arguing and writing.
