It's said that there are several thousand people. That's from the folks on the webcam.
There are a lot of people there, but I don't know how many are looky-loos.
Lt. King is spinning like a top on why nothing has been done to clear them out.
Says they haven’t taken a provocative position, and hoping people will go home.
The PTB in Portland don’t know the definition of “deadline.”
So...on this note, I’m going to bed because this is a low level misdemeanor, they don’t want to escalate to force, and they don’t want to take hostile action. It’s about being peaceful.
Typical...
this is our public education at work.....
I signed up for the live feed....it’s kind of fun anatagonizing them with common sense.
I’ll have to watch for them. They crack me up!
Yeah that cop was spinning. But really there’s nothing they can do at this point...why do they announce the deadlines? It should be a surprise thing.
If you are going to watch for a while, would you mind updating the thread?
Frankly, I am totally sick of it all. I am very disappointed in the Portland PD...not the rank and file members, though. Just the leadership.
They have allowed downtown Portland to become a place where people don’t want to go.
Same here, but the new show doesn't seem very good (IMHO). I watched a bit of it, and then lost interest. Maybe it's me, not the show...
Why did they announce a deadline? For the same reason that Obama would announce a pullout date.
They are stupid, and have absolutely no idea what they are doing WRT these matters.
I haven’t seen it yet, so I can’t comment. But, will watch for it.
Yeah I should be on for another half hour or so......thanks for posting!
Yep.
The current Chief of Police has been working hard to rehabilitate the Portland Police. In the past, they've been a pack of thugs who would put a fist through your face for no reason whatsoever. I've had a few experiences with them that ended up in complaints to them.
This "deadline" was no such thing. It was the Mayor saying that at 12.01am on Sunday the "special dispensation" allowing the protesters to camp in the parks would expire and after that (and no details given) they would begin enforcing the law.
Chief Reese literally told protesters they would have to request an arrest if they wanted one the other day. They spent most of the day passing out flyers in the camp detailing how they could "take a number" and be arrested.
The protesters are pretty much being played here. The rest of the city is taking it as an excuse to throw a party. The anarchists they invited in from Seattle are going to be pretty bored.
The police currently are slowly making a perimeter and I am betting they are just going to lay siege to it and starve them out. Probably have cops showing up with coffee and donuts to entice people out, but let nothing go in at a time of their choosing.
There is no reason to go in and bust heads. I'm liking this -- makes the protesters look like idiots and the police will sweep up the trash when THEY choose to, not when the protesters choose.
Anything to get a good camera shot - even if it means inciting a riot to do so!
The protesters clearly want a fight, hope the cops are smarter than that.
Tear gas is less effective in the rain. But it’s also easier to control. I think it could be properly used to herd the crowd out of the park.
Since it’s chilly and wet, how about water cannons? >:^)
Portland isn't known for rioting. Its usually pretty safe down there so long as you stay out of the hip-hop district. Though lately with the Occupy idiots, the local criminals have taken advantage and its less safe today than it was last year.
Besides, the two parks the Occupy clowns are in are practically right on top of the downtown Police Station. Anyone who gets out of hand won't have to be hauled far.
I won't go down there until they are cleared out.
But they will be cleared out sometime in the next couple of days -- at the leisure of the Portland Police.
The local surplus stores were cleared out of gas masks -- the police laughed and said they wouldn't be needed.
If anyone starts something, it will be the protesters, not the Portland Police, which is as it should be.
They have backup from the surrounding cities and counties. Its going to be a very boring evening. I'm having a good chuckle at this "OMG! Deadline passed!" stuff. It was never intended to be one.
Hats off to the police; they created a plan that took all the so-called "tension" off. If you watch the livestreams or broadcasts, the cops look bored out of their minds.
There is a nice contrast between the live stream feed and the fox 12 feed.
Too funny!
Some do. The ones who came in from Seattle are the same anarchist-types who gave us the WTO Riots there. One clown threw a Molotov (now on $1M bail) but he came from Redding.
Your average Portland Protester is a "sit down and get baked" type. You usually don't have to worry too much about them getting violent so long as they don't run out of Doritos.
The cops have been advertising that to get arrested tonight, the protesters would have to REQUEST an arrest.
There won't be anything going on that the protesters themselves don't start and that isn't going to happen. These are real hippie-dippie types.
The local libs are making this an excuse to throw a street party. Nothing wrong with that given that its Portland - if anything, it will keep things calm.
Thanks! The guy ranting right now is hilarious!
Yep. I think the Portland Police did a good job in planning this out and excellent media communications.
Any problems will HAVE to be started by protesters. The police are being very hands-off.
They are starting to make a perimeter now. They just closed down Main St. between 3rd and 4th -- Main is the street you end up on coming west over the river across the Hawthorne Bridge so this could get interesting.
Sorry, but I'm here laughing my head off. The media created this "OMG! Deadline!" thing and its just funny watching this unfold with ... nothing!
Its even funnier if you know the reputation of the Portland Police. They got in trouble years ago for using the sleeper hold and printed up a bunch of T-shirts with a revolver on them saying "Don't Choke 'em. Smoke 'em!"
