I missed tonights CBS debate, mainly because I spent a great evening with some of my blogging friends here at FreedomWorks BlogCon2011. When I returned, though, I got a few messages about one particular moment in the debate, where CBS moderator attempted to lecture Newt Gingrich on the rule of law regarding American citizens who join the enemy to wage war against the US. Big mistake.
The two worst aspects of this exchange? The smug look on Pelleys face when he challenged Gingrich on this point, and the no you can hear him utter just as Gingrich started his smackdown of Pelley. Regardless of the context of this exchange, this is a perfect encapsulation of why these media debates are utterly worthless, and why the Republican Party needs to force a format change. Pelley isnt running for President, and we dont need to have Pelley debating the presidential candidates. We need them to debate each other. Its only made more ridiculous when a moderator-turned-participant ends up as far out of his depth as Pelley was on this question.
As I mentioned, I didnt watch the debate, but from my Twitter feed and a few e-mails, it seems that many thought that Gingrich and Romney were strong as usual, Rick Perry did surprisingly well, and Herman Cain spent too much time deflecting with promises to have a team of experts look at the issues once hes elected President. I dont know how Rick Santorum did in the debate, but his team sent out their spin e-mail with the subject line, Draft Template, which leads me to conclude that he at least flunked the post-debate. Either that or hes looking to back a new candidate named John R. Template for the Republican nomination.
We already have one open thread for the debate, but feel free to add your opinions on the debate in this thread, too.
Thoughtful reply with which I find much to agree with. As someone said: “the problem with the federal government is that it spends to much to buy things we don’t want.”
The problem with RP’s defense budget stance is that it’s not just ‘bombs’ he would cut. Read closely, RP is advocating a massive reduction in troop and unit levels. Of course, personnel is where the money is and not in ‘bombs’. So if he’s really going to reduce defense costs, personnel and units are where you cut.
RP maintains we don’t really need these high strenght levels if all we need do is defend our borders. I agree with that but I do not agree with the strategic concept behind that. I would much rather fight our wars on their territory than upon ours. Seems to make sense to me.
Or course, RP would say that if we don’t station troops abroad then we’ll will have no enemies. I find that to be a strange thought that defies human nature or the world as it is. We will have enemies regardless of what we do.
The leaders of Iran want our destruction not because of our support to Israel or our troops in Iraq or elsewhere. They believe they have a religious obligation to establish muslim rule across the world and see our defeat and conversion to Islamic rule as essential to that. (There is a reason they refer to Israel as the ‘lesser Satan’ and to the US as the ‘greater Satan’.) We have a choice here, we can fight them there or here. Call me ‘old fashioned’ but I’d rather fight them in the streets of Tehran than the streets of Omaha.
Newt Gingrich is many things but a fall guy he ain’t. If he’s running for president he’s running for president. He will eviserate Barry Soetoro or anyone else in a debate with half his brain tied behind his back. It would be worth it to nominate Newt just to watch him show Bam up for the mediocre affirmative action dolt he really is.
Last I heard, Roemer isn’t even declared in the race.
What info do you have to refute that???
Take off the blinders for once. Who cares if he can out debate Obama? It’s like saying my grandmother voted for Jack Kennedy because he was handsome and that’s not the point. If he was our nominee; he would most likely do as he was told just like McCain. You people never learn.

D’oh. Sorry. Damn. That was my bad.
Dude threw a long looping right that crashed into Velasquez’ ear. Dropped him like someone cut off his power. Afterwards, Velazquez said his equilibrium was gone. I can only imagine catching a viscous shot from that big bastard in the earhole.
D’oh. Sorry. Good thing my Cuban wife didn’t see that spelling. I would have wound up like Velasquez ;-)
Of course Dos Santos first language is Portuguese, not Spanish. In Spanish, “dos” is the word “two.” In Portuguese, “dos” means “of” or “from.”
Newt has his warts but he is not going to be the puppet of the GOP elite leadership. They have not wanted Newt all along. He is way to much of a rogue. They want Mitt because he will go along to get along. If Newt continues to rise in the polls you will see Tokyo, Kraut and Kristol coming out for the attack.
Open your eyes.
Thanks for the apology but it was not a big deal. Now if it was a GSP fight, I would be thoroughly pissed. :-)
That is the point, no American who is involved with the enemy has any right to due process.
No. All American citizens have a right to due process, even when they are insurrectionists. It’s just that we’ve wimped out when it comes to arresting, trying them, and kicking them out. As for Ron Paul’s reasons for questioning, or objecting to, Bin Laden’s take down, he’ll have to speak for himself.
If they are in a foreign nation, involved with enemy forces, we don’t have to arrest them, they deserve the same fate that the enemy does.
Attacking people because we’re afraid of them is not “old-fashioned”.
I believe the law says otherwise, but I understand where you’re coming from.
Well said!
I watched the debate. I felt like reaching out into the screen and punching the prick’s teeth out of his smirking mouth. But all I could do as many was give out a loud F*** You. Hope he finds the Kenyan lose the upcoming POTUS Election by a landslide.
All of the MSM moderators are on a mission.
The CNBC debate the other night somewhat excepted...thought it was decent even with Harwood there...he is a leftist .
