Video: Gingrich schools Pelley on “rule of law” on terrorists
Hot Air ^ | November 12, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

I missed tonight’s CBS debate, mainly because I spent a great evening with some of my blogging friends here at FreedomWorks’ BlogCon2011. When I returned, though, I got a few messages about one particular moment in the debate, where CBS moderator attempted to lecture Newt Gingrich on the “rule of law” regarding American citizens who join the enemy to wage war against the US. Big mistake.

The two worst aspects of this exchange? The smug look on Pelley’s face when he challenged Gingrich on this point, and the “no” you can hear him utter just as Gingrich started his smackdown of Pelley. Regardless of the context of this exchange, this is a perfect encapsulation of why these media debates are utterly worthless, and why the Republican Party needs to force a format change. Pelley isn’t running for President, and we don’t need to have Pelley debating the presidential candidates. We need them to debate each other. It’s only made more ridiculous when a moderator-turned-participant ends up as far out of his depth as Pelley was on this question.

As I mentioned, I didn’t watch the debate, but from my Twitter feed and a few e-mails, it seems that many thought that Gingrich and Romney were strong as usual, Rick Perry did surprisingly well, and Herman Cain spent too much time deflecting with promises to have a team of experts look at the issues once he’s elected President. I don’t know how Rick Santorum did in the debate, but his team sent out their spin e-mail with the subject line, “Draft Template,” which leads me to conclude that he at least flunked the post-debate. Either that or he’s looking to back a new candidate named John R. Template for the Republican nomination.

We already have one open thread for the debate, but feel free to add your opinions on the debate in this thread, too.

I don’t mind Newt, but this being testy with the media is great for conservatives but it will turn off independents.

Despite his warm approach to the CBS Evening News, Pelly is still the pompous prick he always was.

I am an independent conservative, staunch if I might add.

I'm loving the hell out of it.

Newt doesn't have a chance in hades of winning the nomination, but it's great to see someone jap-slap the media.

I’m a Ron Paul supporter, but what you have to say is pretty much correct. The arguments about unconstitutional wars I think are strong. But spending a ton of money on the military isn’t unconstitutional.

And I should add that his “wacky foreign policy views” were mainstream conservative thought pre-Kristol.

I’d argue that this was the debate Ron Paul really only would want 89 seconds. Often people object to the wording as much as the underlying policy.

The idea of saving a whole lot of money by cutting back on our bombs budget is appealing to some conservatives though. Some conservatives realize that we’ve got a truly serious budget problem caused by too much spending and instead of a new national sales tax, or, more of the same and hope the problem goes away, we have to make serious cuts. Ron Paul hopes that by giving the Democrats something that they like, and the Republicans something that they like, he will actually be able to make cuts.

I want to see the size of the federal government shrink a lot. I would like to see a lot of cuts. Way too many people work for the government or depend on money from the government. The government does not do a better job at buying stuff for you. You do a better job of buying stuff that you want for you. So the government should just let you keep your own money and buy your own self. The government is not a good personal shopper.

I think we have enough bombs. I didn’t want to buy them. I woulda bought something else with my share of the bombs money.

...was that Major Garrett sitting next to Jerk-face....

^^
Yes, it was. He was not too impressive, IMO. But Pelley was insufferable. What an arrogant little girly man. I think he is bitter because his shoulders are as little as Bachman’s.

Jerry is still trying to recover from his magic Al Capone vault fiasco.

Sadly many don’t remember he is a hype merchant and fall for
his DMZ tagline “I’m a lawyer” to give him credence.

I love Newts wit, candor and intellect. What I don't admire is his big government propensities.

I once watched a video of Newt down in Mexico speaking Spanish, ensuring the Mexicans that the government would work toward immigration reform.

Not to mention Newt sitting on a couch with Nancy the witch touting global warming nonsense. Kinda torques me.

No offense to Red Skelton (great American, but Pelley’s smug grin there reminds me of Clem Cadilelhopper, one of his characters.

I don’t support Gingrich but someone needed to talk to a liberal puke like Scott Pelley in just that way. Well done, Mr. Speaker.

Newt is without a doubt the Smartest Guy in any room. (that I'm not in anyway ;-))

Bur 'series', it's good to hear a Republican candidate for POTUS say about our sworn enemies: 'We Kill Them'. It was like the good old early days of Dubya when he still had gonads and he and Rummy said "Kill". The pansy left went apoplectic hearing that word and they all came down with a case of the Dithers.

But most of us cheered. That 'macho' word was needed after eight years of the sissified foreign policy of Billy-Jeff and Maddy Not-so-bright who banned the term of 'Rogue Nation' and changed it to: 'A Nation led by people with bad table manners'. Or something just as insipid.

So sorry Pelley and CBS, you got your butt handed to you by Newt. We don't bring Lawyers into a firefight and warn our troops about the enemy's 'Rights'. We Kill Them, even if they were 'once Americans'. And that's that.

The air is kind of let out when you hear a lot of Yale Harvard students were passed with better grades than they should have.

Best luck to ya truthfreedom with them Granite staters.
