I tend to agree with you.

I would think that it would be difficult to transform oneself from a success in the private sector to having to reign oneself in to appeal to a large voter base.

There are politics in business. So I feel that Mr. Cain is no stranger to that. But politics at this level is another animal altogether.

I know I couldn’t do it.

I am sure this site is followed by someone on the Cain team. For once, as FR goes, so goes the nation — our support of Herman through his darkest week was matched by the American people.

Re: Foreign Policy

I trust that Cain knows not to bow to the Chinese Premier, the Saudi King, and the Mayor of Tampa, FL. At this point, that's good enough for me. After three years of Obama, my expectations have been lowered considerably.

When it comes to foreign policy, I am confident that Cain has enough sense not to do this:

People don’t get the Anita Hill joke, but the Pelosi crack is warranted and easily explainable. She fleeced America for millions flying coast to coast with her entourage on a jet for four years. She is a puke, and it’s nice to see a candidate who has the nerve to call this fiend out. Bob

Thanks for the rundown. I planned to watch a vid tonight of the debate, but from your synopsis and others, I think I’ll skip it. I’m suddenly grateful to my kids for tuning into CMT movies tonight.

Ping.

My sincere, honest opinion following last night in South Carolina on Foreign Policy/National Security in #898. No damage, PTL, but the Cain performance needs to be more solid and convincing in this basket.

I always shoot straight--this is what I feel, sorry if it offends, it is offered as "constructive criticism" so we can all work on the right problem ;-).

Feel free to use. More importantly, if you have contacts senior within the Herman Cain camp, please do feel free to forward them the URL link to this thread and this specific post reference for a reality check. If they wish to "FreepMail" me privately offline too and they have FR accounts, I am open 24-hours-a -day for them, will do ANYTHING to assist, and I have some seasoned, well-reasoned strategic suggestions on the foreign policy component. This is what is called "listening to the guys on the ground" (directly from overseas, directly from Asia). I have reached out before but not heard much in the past. I offer the advice and input once again. I hope they will take up the offer.

Seriously. Anyone would be better at f. Policy than Obama, and I can tell Cain has the cojones to be proudly American. Remember that the liberal media, all over the world (I was in switzerland at the time) thought Reagan was an oaf, walking out of the Iceland talks, asking for the wall to be taken down. Yet these were historical.

*YOU* know it. *I*| know it. *1/2 of Educated FR* knows it. But our objective is the wider American People—at least GOP voters in the primaries, many of them who do not pay close attention to these FP things, yet, and if they have any inkling that somebody is a bit weak on something, therein runs the risk of them making a “pass” and moving on to the next guy when the MSM spin and pile on occurs. They will do everything they can to sew doubt and try to destroy Herman Cain one way or another. Too much a threat. That is how volatile this thing is and how we must engineer momentum very skillfully all the way avoid some very sensitively placed “gotcha” landmines, that otherwise Obongo would unfairly get a pass on.

we only got the first hour and thought the same, C, R, N, in center and it seemed the others were only there to balance stage and pass water bottles

Rick has a script and his handlers have obviously told him to stick to that script regardless the question. TO some that equates to "he is doing a great job". To me it screams he is trying his hardest to not make a fool of himself for the umpteenth time.

A talented debater does that by artfully taking a question he doesn't want to answer and skillfully twisting his answer to the talking point he really wanted to make.

The sad thing with Perry is that he's so bad at it, that sometimes, he doesn't even bother to try to twist his answer... he just simply goes straight into his answer as if the questioner asked something entirely different.

Up early to check the thread after I make this one comment:

Scott Pelle reduced to Jelly by Newt.

That guy was an antagonist NOT a moderator.

Also disappointed in Major Garrett - he was almost as horrible.

Only saw the first hour....but Newt is the (States)man.

"I’ll tell you one huge benefit of Michelle is her gender. Just like everyone got the world excited about the first black prez, she could be the first woman."

Actually, I think that hurts her this time around.

After the Obama experiment has turned out to be a debacle, my guess is that the middle-of-the-road independents aren't looking for another "first", but would instead prefer boring and predictable.

"I think we all need to realize that this whole debate thing, while important, is not going to be what “sells” the candidate to most of the voters ...they aren’t even listening right now. Newt is by far the best debater; but, he will still be perceived by the average voter as a pudgy old white guy who is somewhat condescending and boring."

While I agree that the average voter will perceive him as somewhat condescending and boring, I don't agree that's necessarily a negative this time around.

The people I know who don't pay a lot of attention to politics found Obama exciting and voted for him, but are now unhappy that he's been a failure. They're VERY ready to go back to someone they perceive as smart and boring... and let him do the thinking for them, so they don't have to pay attention to politics.

I know. I think there may be more of these primary voters than usual. Do you know who Leo Terrell is? I can’t corroborate this online but Friday evening I walked through a bedroom here where a radio was playing his show. “fair minded civil rights attorney” leo Terrell, who is pretty much a perfect example of typical liberal black groupthink.

I heard him saying that he was so upset over the treatment of Cain that he was going to change his party affiliation to vote for him! It did not sound like a joke, but I couldn’t stay and hear the whole thing. Leo Terrell, voting republican. It’s like cats sleeping with dogs!

The black vote will not be monolithic if Cain makes it to the nomination.

Cain is a quick study. He will improve his foreign policy knowledge. We will notice this difference. He did a great job of getting 999 into the public’s mind. He can do this too.

"The black vote will not be monolithic if Cain makes it to the nomination."

You're spot on... and although I think that most of our candidates could beat Obama, that's why I think it would be easiest for Cain.

There have to be at least a certain percentage, however small, of black voters who aren't thrilled with Obama's performance and won't vote for him again. Cain gives them an option to vote for someone else and not feel disloyal, as opposed to just staying home and not voting at all. So whatever percentage that is, Cain effectively doubles its impact.

That said, I strongly prefer Newt, and if it isn't Gingrich, I would be almost as happy with Bachmann or Santorum as the candidate as I would be with Cain.

A half-dozen people begin their statements with “Like Newt said...” or “As the Speaker said...” I think that tells us a lot.

Did you notice Perry hanging on Newt's words every time they shot Newt from a side camera? It reminded me almost exactly of the look on the face of a kid trying to mentally memorize the words of his smart friend who was warning him what to study for on the next test.
