Gov. Rick Perry stated at the outset of his presidential campaign that he is running for president based on his principles and leadership accomplishments, not his oratorical skills. Media focus on his debate missteps deliberately ignores Perry's record and charisma.
America's third president - Thomas Jefferson - was a lousy public speaker. He was literally a genius, and his singular eloquence as a writer is seen in his prose in the Declaration of Independence and other writings.
But Jefferson was no speaker, so much so that he only gave a couple speeches in his entire two-term presidency. He was so bad that he fulfilled his constitutional requirement to give an annual State of the Union by sending a written document to Congress.
This media obsession with the cosmetics of Perry's presentation willfully ignores the substance of his agenda. Perry's proposals on fundamental overhauls on tax reform, energy, healthcare, and re-empowering the states through federalism could make him a transformational president if he enacts them.
These proposals arise from a massive public record. An Air Force captain, Perry is the only major candidate with military experience. And his subsequent quarter-century of elected office includes a decade as governor enacting tort reform, education reform, and business-friendly policies.

Is this guy really a good leader? I have a good friend in Houston, and her stories about the public school system are curling my toes with all the PC crap. We don’t even have it that bad in New England. I realize the Governor doesn’t sit there and mandate exactly what goes on in schools, but a true leader would sway education away from that garbage. And don’t forget Gardisil (sp?) as long as we’re talking about kids.
The kids of responsible parents are forever being punished, while the others are doted on. Is this really the state we want to look up to??? Does the Governor have any influence on this? Or is he just a token in a state run by others? Is he a leader, or has he just been lucky with a productive state?
The general who won a world war might have won at the polls even in today's media climate.
Ike actually got good advice on how to handle television.
He knew that it was good politics not to look like a knowitall or a wise guy or whiz kid and not to say everything he knew.
Even today that's a good lesson -- one that Newt Gingrich should have learned a long time ago.
So, Rick Perry? My guess is that somebody telegenic or charismatic probably could break through the media bias, and somebody not telegenic or charismatic who had an exceptional record could still win the presidency even in today's media climate, but he's not the one.
There's nothing about Rick Perry that makes people say he has to be President. Most Republicans would vote for him anyway. If the country really wants Obama out a Republican might win. But I don't see undecideds getting enthusiastic about him.
Perry looks like Baghdad Bob with a $100 haircut.
If I can add to this, his core principals are right. He believes in the sanctity of Life. He believes govt is to big and to intrusive, not that it just needs to be managed better. He believes people should be free and able to defend themselves. He trusts in the invisible hand of the marketplace.
I remember a lot of POTUS I admire who were put down for not being the slickest guy in the room. I'll tale the genuine guy every time.
I work with two fellows.
One is a country marine with a speech impediment and is sharp as a tack.
The other one never stops flapping his gums and dresses like he is on the cover of GQ, Guess which one gets respect?
That is pretty funny.
I almost voted against him once, but I have grown to admire his tenacity and values.
It's not the "53 seconds". Perry has been awful in every debate. Every single one. Saying that before the "53 seconds" he was having his best debate means little, his other debate performances were all awful. It is disingenuous to claim that people are criticizing Perry just because of his "53 second" amnesia, it is the "53 seconds" on top of all the other awful debate performances.
You don’t know what you’re talking about but you rattled on at length to drive home that point.
But Rick Perry is telegenic and charismatic and has a fine record.
It’s kind of a longshot now for him to pass Cain, Romney and Newt, but it could happen.
That is funny except that you used the Texas Tech mascot to represent an Aggie. But then that is funny too! I just made it my desktop background. I do like Rick by the way.

Perry is about as conservative as Guiliani, who he heartily endorsed, by the way.
This has become folklore as it's constantly repeated. He has not had "awful" debates but has been singled out as the poster child of bad debates.
Agree! What’s worse...53 seconds or 57 states? The commie in the white house has to go.
He’s also a true and unwaivering anti-Washington conservative which sends shivers up and down the spines of DC insiders, including Republicans.
