Gov. Rick Perry stated at the outset of his presidential campaign that he is running for president based on his principles and leadership accomplishments, not his oratorical skills. Media focus on his debate missteps deliberately ignores Perry's record and charisma.
America's third president - Thomas Jefferson - was a lousy public speaker. He was literally a genius, and his singular eloquence as a writer is seen in his prose in the Declaration of Independence and other writings.
But Jefferson was no speaker, so much so that he only gave a couple speeches in his entire two-term presidency. He was so bad that he fulfilled his constitutional requirement to give an annual State of the Union by sending a written document to Congress.
This media obsession with the cosmetics of Perry's presentation willfully ignores the substance of his agenda. Perry's proposals on fundamental overhauls on tax reform, energy, healthcare, and re-empowering the states through federalism could make him a transformational president if he enacts them.
These proposals arise from a massive public record. An Air Force captain, Perry is the only major candidate with military experience. And his subsequent quarter-century of elected office includes a decade as governor enacting tort reform, education reform, and business-friendly policies.

Give it up RINO TROLL. Perry is every bit as bad for this country as that idiot blame America anti semite paul and is twin fool mitt. You ILLEGAL lovers just can’t see it. Oh, uhh, oh, uhh...’opps’ sorry, that is just heartless.
Absolutely. It’s scary to realize that in the shallow world of sound bite television, we probably would never have had a find president like Jefferson.
Maybe not Eisenhower either and certainly not Truman.
Yeah, and I can win if they go looking for a fat guy who is not named Chris Christie.
Well, Cain hates Perry so Cain/Perry ain’t happening.
And if Perry wins the nomination, he will choose a qualified veep. It won’t be Cain.
He’s mentioned substantive people like John Bolton for secretary of state.
Or simply people whose I.Q.’s are struggling to reach 90.
No, it is heartless to punish children for the sins of their parents.
It is also heartless to drive Hispanics into the waiting arms of the Rats where they will become dependents of the state and never know the joy of self reliance.
Maybe he can go back on Letterman and give his top 10 on “How Rick Perry Can Win” list.
It’s always good to see the calvary arrive!
I hate to point out the obvious, but James Richard Perry is no Thomas Jefferson. There are few if any people on earth, let alone in American politics, who are anywhere close, but Rick Perry certainly is not one of them.
The article is making a good point. Right now Gingrich is surging no doubt because of Cain's problems and Perry's mistake at the last debate. However, as we get closer to actually voting and people begin to think about what the person believes that can change pretty quickly.
I'm sticking with Perry. He is right on the issues and is a successful Gov.
ditto.
What I like about perry is that he is genuine.
He is principled.
He sticks to his guns, but if he is off the mark, he reassess his position.
He aint no slick shyster.
LOL!
You are never alone, there is always a Conservative around FR.
...and forgets the conservative choices.
Amen
Let me add my name to the list of those who don’t think the brain freeze was a big deal. The message he was trying to get out was the elimination of 3 government departments which I support. That is far and away the bigger story in my mind.
Does it take a genius to realize that that bill was unvetoable?
“Remain calm! All is well!”
Calvary? Do you take grammar lessons from Perry too?
Actually, Perry may be a bit more of a "super genius".
