Can Rick Perry Clean Up The Mess He Made For Himself?
ChicoER Gate ^ | 11/11/11 | Chuck Wolk

As I watched the debate Wednesday night between the eight Republican presidential primary opponents, I was overall pleased, both by the way the candidates handled themselves and by the answers they gave to the myriad of economic questions they were asked. It was a debate that I personally think all Republicans won, and while many like myself may think that Perry is finished, the ultimate loser was CNBC. CNBC lost because they could not make the Republican candidates act like a bunch of toddlers fighting over the only toy in the room. The moderators tried their best to get any of the candidates to admit that taxes must be raised to save the economy, but to no avail. All the candidates agreed that raising taxes would be the worst move a president could do. Instead they all called for taxes to be cut, spending to be reduced, and various agencies to be eliminated along with repealing Obamacare.

The moderators also tried to get Cain to stumble in defending himself over the sexual harassment charges against him. That made the audience erupt in boos, expressing their disdain for the question. After Cain answered the question, the moderators tried to lure Romney into the trap of attacking Cain when he was asked if he would hire a man with accusations hanging over his head like Cain. Again the audience booed the question, but Romney would have none of it as he refused to even consider the question. Finally the moderator decided to get back to the economic questions and the charges against Cain were not brought up again.

As for the soundbite or incident the MSM is always looking for so they can ignore talking about the substance of the debate, Perry was gracious enough to give them one. Now as much as I would like to say that the soundbite the MSM is using of Perry is irrelevant to the overall primary race, this time the soundbite is very relevant. The stumble by Perry will go down in history as the final shot that sunk his presidential bid. What makes it so devastating is the fact that he forgot a major part of his economic plan that he was hoping would revive his already faltering campaign. Perry forgot one of the federal agencies he would cut if elected president. While answering a question about the federal tax code, Perry announced that he would eliminate three agencies. What follows is a truncated transcript....

But he isn't an evil cypher, he has been prolife and has fought the EPA. if he changed on amnesty - which again requires the steps outlined not just a speech - then he could become viable.

On this you, I and I'm guessing millions of conservatives can agree. Problem is, his campaign cash comes from big donors who need a cheap and reliable, tax-payer subsidized work force, i.e. Illegal aliens.

I'd vote for him in a second if he would sincerely and completely change his open-border positions. He'd have a cake-walk into the Presidency.

Sadly, he won't.

It was as bad as when Cain had the brain fart on Defined benefit plans during the Lincoln Douglas debate.
Luckily for Cain, Gingrich bailed him out.

The media will continue to rip apart Republicans and build up their chosen Obama. They will look the other way when Obama commits his millionth gaffe.

I’m supporting Cain and Gingrich. Either one. Any order.
Love to see them both on the same ticket in which ever order the majority wants.

Yah, I'm there as well..

I am much more interested in the education and relevant experience of a candidate. I don't know of any great debater who has been a great president. I know of one great debater who is a lousy president.

53 second lapses don't negate 14 years of good state governance. Say what you want but Perry has been a good governor.

And no I am not a Perry supporter. At this moment I like them all plus a few not on the stage. I will make up my mind before going into the booth.

While I agree with you about the memory lapse commonality, it only compounded his previous disastrous performances which in and of themselves put him where he is today. Wetback tuition, gardasil, one dimensional energy and Texas business climate were key factors in his decline prior to this point.

As a Texan, I felt embarrassed for him and us. He jumped off the cliff.

Yes, and like Pres. Bush, a fighter pilot, I think.

I don’t know, but wonder, if any of the others are veterans?

I don’t know if Obama really thought there are 57 states, or if he only misspoke. What concerns me about Perry is that if he truly believes these 3 agencies should go, then even if he couldn’t remember the name of the EPA he should have been able to say something like that one that drives people crazy with all the nitpicking environmental issues. Thus I am afraid he either lacks real convictions on this issue, or is not very good at defending his positions in the very big league of international political negotiating.

it sounds like Mitt did the right thing in refusing to fall for the bait the “moderator” threw out. Good on him. (Even a broken clock is right twice a day.)
Yeah. The best response would probably be to say, "The question assumes that I am smart enough to have business dealings and to hire people. And that is correct. But it also assumes that I'm not smart enough to know that the audience rightly wants me to discuss economic policy rather that to wade into a 'he said, she said' case that I know nothing about. And I would hope that no Republican here is that dumb."

Perhaps Anita wants to be First Lady more than Rick wants to be President.

I only wonder if he will endorse Romney out of spite when he drops out or Newt. I don’t think he endorses Cain at all, they seem to blame Cain supporters for the fall from grace.

He can say he is prolife daily but he hasn’t acted much upon it since he was Governor.

Same thing last election.
Rudy and Romney were and are funded by the big banks, McAmnesty by the construction industry.

Perry has to decide, and he can't expect a weak field in the Governor's race again. If he is going to have a future, he will have to change.

Maybe the humiliation he is getting now will cause some introspection.

I’m not necessarily a Perry supporter, but it certainly seems like the media and many on this forum are quick to “pile on”. Has no one ever had a momentary memory lapse?

The problem is not really this one debate. The memory lapse was just a symptom. He's got another debate coming up this weekend, and I would not be surprised if he's even more nervous.

A common momentary memory lapse happens to people when they are not very familiar with the thing that they are trying to recall. For example it happens to people who cram for a test.

The various departments and particuarly the ones one would want to cut are things that should be ingrained in the mind of the person who wants to cut them. If one forgets which department they want to cut then I believe one is simply not very familiar with the subject a.k.a. Perry crammed for the debate.
