"In 1998, a boy who was 12 at the time told police that Sandusky had showered with him in the Penn State football locker room during a tour. The boy claimed Sandusky assaulted him during the shower.
During our own investigation, years later, the mother told us that she had been specifically instructed by state police not to speak with reporters.
No charges were filed against Sandusky in 1998. With the mother cowed into silence, the incident remained buried.
No further victims or witnesses spoke up until the 2002 incident that involved Mike McQueary, Paterno and other top university officials."
THE STATE POLICE TOLD THE MOTHER TO STAY SILENT....
This story just keeps getting worse, and larger.
Fire the entire coaching staff and shutdown the football program immediately.
Focus on Health care and what Milton Hershey did for the University. That is inspiring news for sure.
I hope the State Police “instruction” to the mother is a caution as to an “ongoing investigation” rather than something more sinister.
BTW folks PSU has a campus in Harrisburg. The newspaper was quite correct in making absolutely certain they had the facts in hand before publishing the original story.
Local-State Police, Local-State Politicians and Child Protective Services all covered it up.
The rush to judgement involving Joe Paterno hides so much more than needs to be dealt with in this story.
The 1998 incident stands out big time. Sandusky was actually on the coaching staff at that time and would leave a year later.
The university police and other authorities including the local District Attorney’s office were involved.
We need answers about who knew what and why it was decided not to prosecute back then?

What's strange about the article or the title?
“..many at Penn State knew of Sandusky’s proclivities; at a local ice cream parlor there was (until yesterday), an ice cream treat named after Sandusky; two scoops of ice cream topped by a cone. “

Pennlive is lying through their snouts in CYA mode.
I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that PA State Police were not involved in the 1998 case.
However, Penn State Police (campus police) were deeply involved and created their own report that the allegations were unfounded.
I want these tidbits to be accurate because they are so important to unraveling this case!
Between the Luzern County “Kids for Cash” scandal and the goings on in Happy Valley, seems like children in PA do not have a happy lot.
Anything heard from GLBT?
I’ll bet the local media down there has been spiking stories on Sandusky for years. Someone should ask media outlets down there to go on the record about what they knew and when they knew it. How long they’ve been practicing don’t ask, don’t tell.
The alternative of staying silent would be 100’s of times worse.

Sandusky flaunted the so-called ban on his bringing kids to campus in fact, he held Second Mile camps on other Penn State campuses as recently as 2008. We never noticed any sanctions against the former coach because they didnt really exist.
So, the cover-up was perpetrated by the PSU Administration, the football staff and the Pennsylvania State Police. And who else, I wonder?
I suggest folks read the grand jury report. Victim 6’s story begins on p. 18. He’s the boy whose mother got the police to investigate Sandusky in 1998. The boy met Sandusky at a picnic when he was 7 or 8 yrs. old. Sandusky spent the next 3 yrs. lavishing him with gifts and attention, but no molestation until he took the boy to the football bldg., wrestled/rough-housed with him, and then insisted they were sweaty and needed a shower. The shower scene describes a naked Sandusky lathering the naked boy and bear-hugging him. No doubt, this was the prelude to eventually progressing episode by episode to the child rape McQueary saw another boy endure in 2002. DA Gricar, even faced with Sandusky admitting to showering with a naked child, lathering him up, and bear-hugging him, may have genuinely believed that event didn’t rise to a criminal offense, especially as there was no claim of earlier questionable conduct between the two.
hmmm.....and when the PA State Police ordered this mother to keep her trap shut, our Governor would have been Tom Ridge.
The same Tom Ridge whose name is being bandied about as Graham Spanier’s replacement...
During our own investigation, years later, the mother told us that she had been specifically instructed by state police not to speak with reporters.
No way would I have kept this secret (given what I know at my age now). If I know, I’m blabbing.
Sounds like a lot of people were involved... on many levels.
So Sandusky was a ped, there were witnesses, it was an open secret at the Penn State administration and athletic department, and yet nobody on the paper, even the sports guys, knew anything, heard anything, saw anything, suspected anything for all those years. Right.
No, sorry. I think these guys were probably as much a part of the Happy Valley good old boys’ network, as much a part of the problem, as anybody at the university.
