Welcome to the Chase for the Sprint Cup #9
Patriotic Pre-Race Festivities to Honor Active Military and Veterans
Phoenix International Raceway and NASCAR fans in attendance for Sundays Kobalt Tools 500 will celebrate Veterans Day by paying tribute to the generations of men and women who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces during the pre-race show beginning at noon on November 13.
The spectacular pre-race show will also include:
· 36 soldiers (nine each from Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines) will be honored in the Bryan Grandstand as they march down toward the track, waving American Flags
· An aerial entrance to the track by the Arizona Skyhawks carrying the American Flag
· Turn 2 display of a 200-foot American Flag presented by Arizona Project ChalleNGe
· National Anthem by Pentagon-awarded Armed Forces Entertainers of the Year, Catchpenny
· Flyover by four F-16s from the 62nd Fighter Squadron out of Luke Air Force Base
· Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard
· Moment of silence to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom prior to the National Anthem
A new paint scheme designed using photos of Vietnam Veterans - submitted by soldiers and their families through a contest sponsored by the U.S. Army - will be featured on Ryan Newman's No. 39 Chevy during the Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

Bowyer to run USO "Cheer" paint scheme at Phoenix
The No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer will carry a special message during the Sprint Cup Series event this Veterans Day weekend at Phoenix. The design features the message "send Cheer" to encourage fans to send thanks and spread cheer to military families whose loved ones are serving our country.
The paint scheme is part of a partnership between Cheerios and the USO to help support military families by sending "Cheer" postcards from the front of specially marked packages of Cheerios cereal found in stores through November 2011. People can simply cut out the postcard from the box, write a message of thanks on the back, add a stamp, and mail the pre-addressed postcard to the USO. The USO will deliver the postcards to military families at events at USO centers across the nation.
"I can't thank General Mills and the USO enough for their support this weekend at Phoenix," Bowyer said. "It's a really cool paint scheme and I'm excited about driving it. I hope it encourages everyone out there to 'send Cheer' to our nation's military families."
Race fans will also be able to send thanks and encouragement at Phoenix by visiting the "Cheer" display located outside the track throughout the entire race weekend. You can fill out a postcard and have it sent to military families by the USO.

In need of refreshments?
Multiple Grammy Award winning recording artists Los Lobos who reached super-stardom in 1987 with their chart-topping cover of Ritchie Valens La Bamba will perform at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Budweiser ROLL-Bar main stage prior to the Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
The five-piece eclectic ensemble from East Los Angeles includes David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas, and Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin. The band has been performing and releasing records for nearly four decades sharing the stage with acts such as Bob Dylan, U2 and the Grateful Dead. With their eclectic style that draws from rock, country, folk, R&B, blues and traditional Spanish and Mexican music, the band continues to redefine their sound while maintaining a rich musical tradition. In August 2010, the group released their first album in four years, entitled Tin Can Trust. This year they launched an international tour with stops in Europe and Australia

I remember when racing was about racing and not sponsors and owners points and First Wookies as Grand Marshals.
the memories are dim but.. still there.
For now. ;-)

Unnnghh..
All I can say.. shades of Cindy McCain a couple years ago
and now
as I usually do as the season winds down..
I ask myself..
Do I want to keep doing this thread?
Nascar has sure changed in 10 years.. in more ways than one.. the threads are pretty tame compared to the old days..
But I see more politics and less innovation,
maybe it’s time I move on to another track.
a cookie cutter mentality, a sameness..
Oh vell, maybe I can move to Alaska and mine for gold..
winter’s will be spent in Hawaii beackcombing and stuff
you know how cold it gets there. ;-)

Makes me really wonder why I bother watching it sometimes.
I did enjoy going to the races last weekend, but not near as much as I used to. I know part of that is because I don’t have my partner with me anymore and that we used to take the kids and grandkids, but there more to it than that.
Nascar’s idiotic decisions on car changes, the whole cornholio thing, and now catering to a political stunt than in no way represents the political opinions of race fans.

Hi ALL...
Clicked on the Mooshell Grand Marshall article this AM and have been wretching all day.
Decorum probably dictates that she will be roundly boo’d at the race, considering that the nominal Nascar Fan is not a fan of her hubby.
Shame on Helton and Nascar for injecting politics and dirty politics at that.

The bright side is 1] “they’re” desperate, 2) Lord willing it’ll be the last time she’ll / they’ll do politicking at a race, although there is next year...
Saw John/Cindy McCain (politicking) at the New Hampshire race in ‘08. He gave a short speech in pre-race ceremonies to a mixed reaction. Being the G.M. and giving the command is a whole different can of worms. What are the handlers thinking???

I’m not done yet.
Thank you Norm, for the thousands of posts over the years you’ve made to keep FR folk, and those who stumble across our pages, aware of the changing world around us. You’ve stuck with us, and it is not only appreciated, it is essential.
When you find your vein of gold in Alaska, we’ll hold you to having us up for the salmon run, and the likely beer run... and further, we’ll look for you on the beach at Waikiki. I’ll be there in a couple weeks. Look for the tall white guy with the Nikon... and a herd of really tall and annoying children. Beer’s on me. And probably on my NRA t-shirt, camera, and hotel room carpet.
Just sayin. Um.

Just watching some parts of ‘The Pacific’ on hbo..
It seems like every generation some are asked to make the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedoms and liberties and defend our allies.
I’m one of the lucky ones.. those who gave all without question are the true American heros and patriots.
I’d be proud to stand in their shadow come rain or shine.
