Madden: Sandusky a State Secret (Penn State Scandal)
Beaver County Times ^ | April 3, 2011 | Mark Madden

Posted on 11/10/2011 4:17:57 AM PST by Scoutmaster

The Jerry Sandusky situation seems a matter of failure to connect certain dots, or perhaps unwillingness in that regard. Lots of people besides the former Penn State defensive coordinator have some explaining to do.

Allegations of improper conduct with an underage male first surfaced in 1998, while Sandusky was still employed by Penn State. That incident allegedly occurred in a shower at Penn State's on-campus football facility. No charges were filed.

Sandusky retired the next year, in 1999. He was 55, prime age for a coach. Odd, to say the least - especially with Joe Paterno thought even then to be ready to quit and Sandusky a likely, openly-discussed successor.

It seems logical to ask: What did Paterno know, and when did he know it? What did Penn State's administration know, and when did they know it?

Best-case scenario: Charges are never brought, and Sandusky walks away with his reputation permanently scarred. The rumors, the jokes, the sideways glances - they won't ever stop. Paterno and Penn State do the great escape . Worst-case scenario: Sandusky is charged. Then it seems reasonable to wonder: Did Penn State not make an issue of Sandusky's alleged behavior in 1998 in exchange for him walking away from the program at an age premature for most coaches? Did Penn State's considerable influence help get Sandusky off the hook? Don't kid yourself. That could happen. Don't underestimate the power of Paterno and Penn State in central Pennsylvania when it comes to politicians, the police and the media.

In 1999, Penn State was rid of Sandusky. His rep was unblemished, which allowed him to continue running a charitable foundation that gave him access to underage males. To be a volunteer assistant with a high school football team, thus gaining access to underage males.

If Paterno and Penn State knew, but didn't act, instead facilitating Sandusky's untroubled retirement - are Paterno and Penn State responsible for untoward acts since committed by Sandusky? This is far from an outrageous hypothesis, especially given the convenient timeline.

Initially accused in 1998. Retires in 1999. Never coaches college football again. Sandusky was very successful at what he did. The architect of Linebacker U. Helped win national championships in 1982 and 1986. Recognized as college football's top assistant in 1986 and 1999.

Never any stories about Sandusky being pursued for a high-profile job. Never any rumors about him coming out of retirement. But there's no shortage of stories and rumors about Penn State football sweeping problems under the rug, is there?

Why did college football let an accomplished coach like Sandusky walk away at 55? Why did he disappear into relative anonymity? A grand jury, spurred by a complaint made by a 15-year-old boy in 2009, has been investigating Sandusky for 18 months. Witnesses include Paterno and Penn State athletic director Tim Curley. Interviewing Paterno about a subject like this had to have been one of the single most uncomfortable acts in the history of jurisprudence.

Plenty of questions remain yet unanswered. Potentially among them: What's more important, Penn State football or the welfare of a few kids?

You might not want to hear the answer.

Folks at PSU all the way up to the President knew about this for years and did nothing. And their reason was to keep the party going, the party centered around the cult of JoePa, who never bent the truth...

I don't think my point is all that different from yours. I am saying that the culture of the cover-up is inherent in college athletics. So they saw this as just another incovenient fact to manage. However, it was a far more heinous cover-up than hiding booster payola to top athetes, so when the truth came out it was explosive. I entirely agree with the corrosive nature of the cult of personality of Joe Pa, but IMO the root of that is the same phenomenon that leads boosters to shell out cash payola to star atheletes to attract them to the school.

I really don't have a dog in this hunt, I live in PA and am all-to-well aware of the Penn State football mania here, but I didn't go to college here, went to a large state school in another state with its own statewide football mania - one that from your screen name, you are probably well aware of.

“Makes sense until you consider that Casey Anthony - who behaved like a high school party girl for 30 days while Caylee was “missing” - beat the endangering-the-welfare-of-a-child rap because “everyone grieves differently”.”

Now there are two little children missing, their mothers the last to see them, remaining silent EXCEPT TO LIE TO POLICE and plenty of evidence to arrest them, yet the authorities wait. A little ten-month old girl missing in Missouri a two-year old boy in Seattle. The Casey Anthony jury gave mothers all over this country a “HOW TO GET RID OF YOUR CHILD WITHOUT GOING TO PRISON” MANUAL.

I have read the grand jury report. The evidence against Sandusky is overwhelming. He has declared that he is innocent! In addition to being a homosexual pervert he must also be delusional.

I don't buy that Paterno was not close with Sandusky. The coached together for thirty years. That phrase was put out to distance Paterno from Sandusky.

This is the same Mark Madden who was fired from his Pittsburgh talk radio show because on the day Teddy Kennedy died, he wondered aloud on-air “where is the outpouring of concern and compassion for Mary Jo Kopechne and her family?”

That is more a commentary on the gross human inadequacy of her jury pool and the extraordinary difficulty for prosectors (in some parts of the non-Pennsylvania Amish country) in assembling a minimally competent jury. There's a scandal that needs addressing. Another day, perhaps.

Fortunately though, in this instance, here was an exemplary grand jury.

Where was Mrs. Sandusky while Mr. S. was spending so much time in the basement?

No, it was the “I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated” line that got him canned.

That said, Madden doesn’t generally subscribe to the cult of personality that arises around big time sports (although he has a soft spot for the Pittsburgh Penguins), and is regarded as something of a pariah in the local sports community becuase of that. Even he says he didn’t have to do any real digging for his April Sandusky story, he only had to report what no one else would.

Sick, disgusting, Unfathomable. Adult men - football coaches no less - unleash a child predator on a children’s charity. The entire chain of command are each 100% responsible for all his attacks after they had ANY indication who he really was - much less actual eyewitness reports (or the eyewitnesses themselves). This isn’t NCAA infractions, it’s not even theft or other crimes - it’s one of the few “unforgiveable” crimes against innocent kids and humanity itself.

How does ANY adult look the other way from this? That’s the question on the minds of all Paterno fans. How could Paterno ever see Sandusky’s disgusting face again without physically attacking him? What kind of “man” is McQueery (sp?)? The AD and up need to be prosecuted, but what about JoePa and McQ ? It isn’t a crime to have direct nature of a felony child assualt and not report this to the police? “I told the A.D. !?!!?!?!?????” You’ve got to be kidding. JoePa knew it went nowhere - PSU later told The Second Mile people that the matter was investigated and found to be nothing. Good God!!!!

I HOPE upon hope that I do not know one single adult that would ignore/coverup any similar incedent thay had knowledge of, no matter what the consequences are. Is THIS what our society has become? It’s very terrifying for those of us with kids. The Catholic Church!?!?!? PSU Football!?!?!? “Bishop JoePa”!?!?!?

I hope Bishop JoePa is tourtured by this for the rest of his days - his own personal hell. I hope the media NEVER puts this on the back burner and talks about his football achievements. Every discussion about the “man” needs to start and end with how he let a monster loose on unsuspecting children - and with his implied “blessing” as a retired PSU coach from the Paterno family.

Enjoy the rest of your miserable life, Bishop JoePa.

If the Joe Paterno quote and the Mike McQueary letter weren't ironic enough, Jerry Sandusky wrote an autobiography in 2001, the year before McQueary caught him anally raping a pre-teen boy in the Penn State football showers. And of course, before Joe Paterno said he was only told it was "fondling" (or something of a sexual nature). And we know of at least nineteen other boys who were molested by Sandusky.

As I said, the final bit of irony? Sandusky wrote an autobiography in 2001.

The title? Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story.

I'm not kidding. Here's the cover:

Whenever someone you highly respect suddenly is shown not to be who you thought they were, it is hard to believe.

These pervs set themselves up in child upliftment organizations and activities. They are highly manipulative and without conscience. They have the appearance being almost heroic in their dedication to boys.

Pervs target the churches, schools, boy scouts, establish mentoring programs for boys, and currently, serve to help sexually confused boys in school programs. Wherever they can get access to victims, they will be. They interact with and support one another in their quest for victims and share their sexual conquests with one another.

The boys scouts became totally infested by homo pervs preying on boys and that is why they now ban homos from the organization and do not permit a man to be alone with scouts - there has to be two men present. Elton John did a concert during the 90’s in which small, young looking men were dressed in boy scout uniforms simulating homosexual activity on stage. That was no accident.

That’s why none of my daughters ever went away to a sleep camp. I was always warned by my mother not to do it.
