No, it was the “I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated” line that got him canned.
That said, Madden doesn’t generally subscribe to the cult of personality that arises around big time sports (although he has a soft spot for the Pittsburgh Penguins), and is regarded as something of a pariah in the local sports community becuase of that. Even he says he didn’t have to do any real digging for his April Sandusky story, he only had to report what no one else would.
