Style, Substance, Perry, and the Media
The American Spectator ^ | November 10, 2011 | Mike Johnson

Rick Perry gave a superb speech to NH Cornerstone, a New Hampshire conservative group. The full speech is here and well worth the time to watch (about 25 minutes). In fact, this partisan New Hampshire reporter considers the speech close to perfect for the audience.

How did the left-leaning media react? As could perhaps be anticipated, with ridicule and mockery. For example, in a harsh piece by Brian Browdie of the NY Daily News titled "Rick Perry's unusually expressive 2012 speech in New Hampshire sparks rumors he was drunk," ...

..Why did the media react this way? Maybe because Perry is a conservative, and the media are liberal. Maybe for Perry's exhibiting "unquestionably unpresidential behavior," as David Badash of the New Civil Rights Movement put it. What is the current definition of presidential behavior during a speaking engagement? The loud, monotonous rant we are witnessing so often of late? The disingenuous or worse content of those rants?

Perry opened his remarks with the World Series. He said that he had arrived in New Hampshire Thursday evening with the Rangers leading 7-4. He gave an exuberant shout, with much arm-waving ("gesticulating wildly"). Texas was finally going to be a world champion after fifty years. Then, in a much more subdued voice, Perry said that it was now Friday, and they were still playing. This is where the edited version dropped out. In the actual speech, Perry went on to say that Chris Carpenter was pitching, and he is from New Hampshire, implying that Texas had no chance. Self-deprecating humor, timing that Jack Benny would envy, and audience involvement. The crowd went wild -- cheers and applause. He had them.....

What kind of drugs are you on??? Decades of military experience, Perry was a damn freight hauler pilot, and I doubt if he was a very good one of those.

“You must be referring to Rasmussen. But in the same poll, they did a comparison of Cain against Obama and it came out 48% Obama and 37% Cain. In the same poll a month ago, Cain had a slight lead over Obama.”

The head-to-heads simply don’t matter at this point. To the general public, Cain is that black pizza guy that hits on women. That’s it. But once he’s the nominee, then EVERYTHING changes.

Reagan had the same problem 32 years ago. People were CONVINCED that he would blow up the world, and he didn’t stand a prayer against Carter. The Dems very much preferred to run against Reagan, rather than Bush-41. They got what they wanted and Reagan won the first of his two landslides. Every changed once Reagan was the nominee. Same with Obama in the other direction...he was the EASY candidate to beat (versus Hillary), no experience, a checkered past - while the Republicans had a guy with more political experience than virtually anyone that’s ever run. Obama in a near-landslide.

So those polls mean NOTHING today, and most of the time, they predict the wrong way.

It’s true. We are a Vast Mitt Wing Conspiracy. Jim is our leader and he’s hatched a Machievelian plot to get Romney elected. But that dang guy with under 10% of the vote and less by the hour will thwart our daseardly plans if only we’d just shut up about it....Well, not really.

Are you really at the point now where you think we want Romney elected? Really? The other day I asked you if you really believed the things you say and you answered (after some dodging) in the afirmative. So aparently you really are suffering from some deluded thought process.

Look. I was one of if not the nost vocal Palinista on this site. There came a time that I had to accept that Palin was not running. That time is now here for you. It does you or any remaining credibility you may enjoy outside the Perry support circle to continue this charade.

Don’t support Cain? So be it. But pick a viable candidate and get behind them. It’s time to let it go.

I see you're up and running again on your Perry spam.

The man is done. He needed to help himself. Instead, he's the lead negative story on Drudge. (yea, I know, nobody reads Drudge, right?!)

The anti-Perry trolls don’t think for themselves...they read their Dem talking points and get paid by the post..

They can't hide from us when they push the Dem talking points such as support or sympathy for global warming candidates, LaRaza, HillaryCare, BiNational healthcare,in state tuition for illegals, .... hell, one might even be a former state campaign manager for Goofy Gore's presidential run. Fraudulent conservatives are lurking here and are getting paid by the post.Damn trolls should be banned.

Have you ever seen a single seat "Freighter" like this? And his service is on record and it was stellar. But you are never concerned about truth, you function mostly on rhetoric.

LOL! You are forgetting I responded you your comment about how significant the recent poll showing Cain in the lead was.

So which is it? If it favors your point of view, it is valid, and if it does not, it is bogus?

Be sure to “educate” me on how elections work. Especially about 6 months from now. I am a former Reagan campaign worker and have a pretty good handle on how things work. And I especially have a good feel for how a good campaign and election should be handled.

But thanks anyway in trying to set me straight or enlighten me in proper behavior. Although that will not be easy, since my service in the Military still has a firm influence on me in that respect. (especially on the issue of respect.)

For a guy that claims to have worked for RR and served in the military you sure seem to have a firm grasp on delusion. And as for respect, anyone reading your post history can easily see that you and ‘respect’ haven’t done lunch together for quite some time.

Since you asked, Elections work/candidates win when a majority or plurality of voters cast a vote for a candidate and he haZ a happy. Having less than 10% of America behind you (lets double that to account for the margin of liberal and call it 20% for kicks) does not get you anything but a footnote mention in the history books. It does not win elections.

Please, oh respectfully brilliant Reagan worker, explain to my woefully uneducated self just how it is that in a 2 way election, 20% get you a ticket to the big job.

I eagerly await your wizened schooling of my pathetic intelect. I strangely think that a guy with in reality less than 10% support and likely 5 in the next poll thanks to consistantly bad debate performances, is a candidate for obscurity, not the Presidency. School me, because at this rate, reelection to the Texas Governor’s job isn’t looking a whole lot better than his national hopes.

“C-130’s are a piece of cake to fly.”

I’d be happy to climb in a plane with Perry. I just don’t want him running the country.
