Police in riot gear deal with Penn State students gathering to support Joe Paterno

STATE COLLEGE -- More than a thousand Penn State students are moving between the campus and downtown, chanting in support of football coach Joe Paterno, whose job has been questioned over his handling of sex-abuse allegations involving a former coach.

Crowds began to gather around 10 p.m. on Beaver Avenue. After police in riot gear told them to move along, the students moved to Old Main. They sang the alma mater, professed their love for Paterno and profanely denounced Sandusky. They pointed toward Penn State president Graham Spanier's still-lit office. Then, after a brief "back to Beaver" chant, the crowd returned to Beaver Avenue.

So a thousand penn students support child abuse, they need to put that on their job applications.

Afraid not. He broke no law.

Keep trying with the puns that actually make sense.

"Penn State head coach Joe Paterno is greeted by hundreds of students at his house as he returns home from practice. "

Our son is in that photo. We've been in touch with him all evening, and we're glad that he has the sense to stay away from the angry crowd. He and his friends are keeping it civilized. They understand that they're representing their university community with their actions and words. Fortunately, most of these young adults are behaving with grace during a very difficult time. In the long run, I believe that they and the school will end up stronger.

Well a lot more than that, there is the little problem of the dead/missing DA, that started the first investigation.

Are you really serious? Nothing happened within the athletic department without Joe Paternos’ explicit or implicit approval. He was and obviously still is held up as some sort of god.

I’m sick over this, to think of the sweet children being harmed, the ONLY appropriate response to learning of such is to detonate the whole thing.

Child molesters should be castrated and have “Sex Offender” tattooed on their faces.

Anyone covering up for a child molester is despicable.

Cherishing and protecting the innocence of children is a component of human decency and of utmost priority superseding ALL other concerns.

I am ill over this. My heart is wrenched to think of the kids harmed.

“Truly stupid kids. Our future leaders?”

AGREED!!!!! My 16 yr old daughter said nonchalantly walking by the tv when this was on that those kids are idiots. By supporting the coach they are condoning what he did.
My 17 yr old son feels the same...it feels good to know I am raising them the right way with the right mind set....I would be embarrassed if I knew my kid was in that crowd.

I could not have said it better myself. I see him smiling as he goes thru the crowd and it makes me ill. He should be hanging his head in shame. He could have and should have done more and did not - why - my guess personal greed. Someday he will meet his maker and have to give his answer....

If those holier-than-thou morons had ANY sense, they’d have let Joe finish the season. I’ll bet that some or all of THEM had heard about the Sandusky perversions on campus as well. Bob

He helped cover up the perverts activities some twelve years ago.

That accusation is being made by more than a few members of the media. As of now, I've seen nothing factual to support these claims.

What we have is a horrifying Grand Jury report, a DA (Ray Gricar) who had investigated Sandusky who later went missing and a media making lots of accusations.

I don't know what to think but I'm reluctant to consider Paterno tried and convicted based upon media reports. I don't know why I just don't trust the media?

... well ...

that too ...

As for the students, let’s all remember these are good hearted kids, ahem, as in, THON, the biggest college level fundraiser in America, every year, on behalf of kids with cancer.

They love their football but they also have HEART.

THON.

I don’t want to hear any crap about the students condoning child abuse. They love Joe and they are upset. They’re good kids.

THON.

I think they did it more for Joe’s own good, it’s not as if he could be entirely focused on coaching, and the atmosphere surrounding the games was going to be a circus had he been on the sidelines....in fact, I won’t be shocked if Penn State doesn’t wind up just going ahead and forfeiting the rest of their games this season.

"I would be embarrassed if I knew my kid was in that crowd."

Even within our FR community, there are a lot of disagreements about Joe Paterno's situation. Our son has demonstrated support for the coach while expressing his disgust over the allegations. I can understand that he doesn't think he has all the facts and that we're dealing with someone who has contributed a great deal to the university over many years. As long as his behavior is civilized and respectful, I am not at all embarrassed that he's with students who are supporting the coach. I don't have to agree with all of his opinions to support him in expressing his position - provided it's done respectfully. It's part of growing up.

I’ll bet that hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of people on campus knew about Sandusky; now the trustees want to give the impression that they are pure as a wind-driven Democrat. Bob
