CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. A 19-year-old found dead in his Camp Pendleton barracks had been beaten to death by a fellow Marine, investigators say.
Lance Cpl. Mario Arias Jr., from Canoga Park, Calif., was attacked at the San Diego County base over the weekend, authorities said.
The air crew trainee, from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, enlisted in August 2010.
The Naval Criminal Investigation Service said the suspect is being treated in a hospital for "significant injuries" sustained when he jumped from a third-floor balcony.
Ed Buice, spokesman for NCIS at its headquaters in Quantico, Va., told msnbc.com that neither the suspect's identity nor the hospital where he is being treated would be released until charges had been brought.

“Just hoping this is not somehow related to the sexual orientation...” or race. Arias signed up in ‘10, before DADT was eliminated. Just sad, no matter the circumstances.
That’s what I’m wondering. Somebody knew enough to say that the confrontation was over the suspect’s drinking, and they could only know that if they were present.
Something’s not making sense here.
Things must have calmed down by the time I enlisted.
Although, one night when I had barracks duty a drunk Marine did try to toss me off the second deck of the barracks. He was too drunk to manage it, thankfully, and was properly contrite the next morning after his friends told him what he did. Too late, it was already in the log book. Wonder whatever happened to him?
Or if it were a constant occurance.
gay?
YOu bet they do. These kids live in palaces compared to the nasty squadbay I endured in Okinawa.
If it was two queers we will never read or hear about it in the MSM.
Since DADT has been stricken, the suspicion should be:
“Did he Tell them that he was a homosexual, and the Ask them to perform a homosexual act?”
I have been predicting a rash of military homicides from this for years. And soon, commanders will learn the lesson that under *no* circumstances should those homicides be recorded as because of the sexuality of anyone involved.
This will include the murderer, who will be bluntly told that if he fabricates *any* other reason for the murder, he will get years’ less time in prison.
Sounds gay, but we'll have to wait and see. When I was in the Army, there were a lot of guys drinking themselves to an early grave. I never "confronted" any of them, not even the ones I liked, because it was none of my business.
I volunteered for VN in ‘70 to get out of our drug ridden racially divided kaserne. Much safer out in War Zone C than in the barracks at night with various stoners, dealers, junkies, and race haters running around.

Those were the times when “low risk criminals” had a choice of going in the army or going to jail. We had some real treasures in the women’s barracks.
No somethings not.
We had a guy that had restored two ‘57 Chevies in high school. Carried pictures of them around in his wallet, and would pull them out the way other guys showed off their wives or girl friends.
One was stock, and the other was balanced and blueprinted with nitrous injection and similarly beefed up steering and suspension.
The kid would blow into some Midwest town, pick up some local girl, and cruise the local strip, After a week or so, he would race some local hotshot for pink slips. Then he would skip town before the newly carless discovered that the car was a ringer.
Alas, he eventually blew into a town where his floozy of the week turned out to be the local judges daughter (and an overly mature looking fourteen). Ergot - Marine Corps.
His mom sold both those cars while we were at stumps.
Hate to say it but that was my first thought.
it fits the pattern for either one or both being homosexual.
While stationed at Mainside at Camp Pendleton in the late 70s, a lance corporal bludgeoned to death a corporal in the enlisted quarters where I lived....simply for being passed over for promotion.
There's no evidence that either one is a sodomite. One was drinking and the drink may simply have compromised any sound judgment he may have had.
Drink first compromises judgment. And after considerable drinking only then it will effect ability. He apparently was not compromised enough to not be able beat the other marine to death. But he was compromised judgmentally enough to jump from the 3rd floor.
Yes and a big new hospital coming up by the I-5 gate in O-side.
