Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry on Tuesday blasted as irresponsible the repeal of the policy that barred openly gay troops from serving in the military, saying dont ask, dont tell was working well.
The idea that the president of the United States wanted to make a political statement using our men and women in the military as the tool for that was irresponsible, Perry said in an interview with ABC News Christiane Amanpour.
The ban was lifted in September, ending a provision that President Barack Obama said had forced gay and lesbian service members to lie about who they are.
Perry, a former Air Force pilot, accused Obama of playing to his political base at a time when the U.S. is fighting two wars. But the governor wouldnt say whether he would have been uncomfortable serving with openly gay service members.
I dont ask that question, he said. If an individual in their private life makes a decision about their sexuality, from the standpoint of how theyre going to practice it, thats their business.
Among other snippets from the exchange, part of ABC News daylong effort to talk with every GOP presidential contender:
Perry declined to delve into the sexual harassment allegations against rival Herman Cain, saying he doesnt have an interest in getting off my message of how we create jobs.
He brushed aside assertions that his flat-tax plan would bring in less revenue, requiring cuts in federal entitlement programs. He said the best safety net for an American is to have access to a job.
