UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.
As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."
"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paternos exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

I am a Georgia “Dawg” through and through and was not a happy camper after Penn State and Paterno whipped us pretty bad in the ‘82 Sugar Bowl and ended an undefeated Georgia season and a likely national championship.
Still, I felt like Paterno was among the best men in the coaching profession and if he were a “Jackie Sherrill or Barry Switzer”-—both of whom he publicly criticized-—a pile of crap would have come out long ago.
Paterno was railroaded by bloodthirsty media and gutless “Politburo” as you call it.
Funny-—the U. did not act against Sandusky in ‘99 because of image concerns...and it smashed Paterno in ‘11 because of the same image worries.
Either way, the Board showed zero courage and zero moral values either in ‘99 or ‘11.
Your last line is a perfect description of the situation. I was in shock last night as I told my buddy that they just took the situation from bad to worse.
Part of me never wants to attend a PSU football game again. That might be the anger right now and I don’t want to punish the wrong people.
Or earlier.
