UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.
As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."
"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paternos exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

The problem with Paterno is that he allowed himself to become the face of the program. Now that the program has rightfully suffered a horrible blemish, it can not help but reflect poorly on him.
Where do you get your information?
I’m just curious since it’s not factual. Paterno’s address isn’t a secret and has pretty much never been. I guess a lot of your other posts make sense now.
“Paterno may fight with the same ferocity he showed in 2008, when he scoffed at claims that his program—which had seen 46 players face criminal charges over a period of five-plus years—was out of control. He bared his teeth at reporters who questioned him then. He called it a “witch hunt.” And, indeed, it all soon blew over and everyone loved JoePa again.”

Paterno to reporters-”Who the f**k are you to question me? I’m JoePa, and you should be on your knees worshipping me!”
Dear Citizen of The Globe??? Wow!
Oh, good grief. ESPN just interviewed some Penn students and they said Paterno is being unfairly smeared and that he did nothing wrong. The leaders of tomorrow, folks.
I bet the upcoming Penn/Ped game will be the most watched college football game in history.
Penn = University of Pennsylvania
Penn State = Pennsylvania State University
(the first one has a really good football team, too, but you've probably never seen them)
That is what a responsible adult would do when a valid witness comes in and says they witnessed a homo pervert raping a boy!
If I learned this from a trustworthy witness at my corner gym, I would call the police. It does not matter to me whether I employ the perv or just run across his handiwork as I live my life. It is an emergency situation. Homo sex abuse of boys hides and thrives behind secrecy and fear.
Some men seem a tad confused about the ethical imperatives involved in adults dealing responsibly with boy sexual child abuse issues. Some Freepers have a hard time seeing the homo rape of a man as something horrific, too. Live and learn from this so if any of us are ever confronted with such a nightmare, none of us are not ethically ignorant and end up adding to the problem for more boys.
This man homosexually raped a child. He’s a homo or he’s a bi. He’s not heterosexual. The homo lobby like to pretend the perps are not homos when they rape a boy. That is a lie born of political correctness.
Wait and see all the cases that come down in ten years from all the boys lassoed into the gay/strait sex culbs in the schools... These sex clubs have secrecy codes - “you can’t tell your parents what we are saying and doing.” They are being groomed.
There are ethical standards and expectations for people in power and then there are also laws that come into play in situations.
Ethical standards were severely breached but Paterno was not indicted for breaking laws. He won’t go to jail but he and all the University employees who knew and did not stop him, should be fired for breaching ethical standards.
but sadly, there is no changing a homosexual predator.....
what passes for courage nowadays...
however, there was an incident several years ago where a black quarterback at Penn State had beaten up a cop over in New Jersey IIRC.. I think it happened at a bar and the white cop was with his black girlfriend.....the beating was a racial attack ....it was discussed here on FR...
the black qb was a "star" and Joe P let him come back....
see if he was really the standup guy we all think, that qb would never have been allowed to come back....just on principle....
Remember, the Confederate States of America thought it would be equally easy to defeat the Yankees, but they didn't reckon with the stubborn Lincoln.
You do realize that the "witness" was a 28-year-old man, right? You know, the guy who backed away from a child rape and called his Dad?
Is he culpable, or is it all Paterno's fault?
Lancey, they are all responsible. If I lived in that town and I learned about it and did not move to stop it, I would be responsible. It thrives in secrecy. It’s weapon is fear and shame. It devours as many boys as it can before it is stopped. It dies in exposure. That is where political correctness comes in - to keep the truth hidden.
Do you really understand how horrendous homo sex abuse is to the psychology of boys and teens? It is not just a sex act; it is a manipulative heart and soul devouring act for many males. I think if you understood what happens to most males who suffer this assault on their whole idenity and how it haunts their whole life path and relationships, you would not be having problems understanding that any adult who knew needed to raise hell in every way possible to stop the predator from getting access to and raping more boys.
Since we have turned lose homosexual males on society with special sexual dominance rights over other males (in the name of stopping “bullying” which means rejecting their sexual expression around adult males and all the little boys and teens), all men need to come to grips with the reality of sexual aggression and be prepared to deal with it.
Society is giving homosexuals sexual dominance rights over other males. It’s a sexual agression that if males resist, are punished as haters and rejects. They don’t pro-create. They recruit. Did you read about the lesbians in England who got the right from the government to have their young boy’s sexual organs removed? The drive behind this sexual movement is that devouring of males. To me males are precious and don’t deserve to be changed by and suffer this abuse. This is long. I’m sorry. :(
Great post right there. I agree with everything you wrote, 100%

Thank you.
except it is not an accepted activity in America...and it is a criminal activity and when caught it is a felony...in some areas of the country perps when caught are beaten mercilessly...and in prison, child molesters are singled out and often killed.
Yes there are those who would legitimize this activity...but for the most part it is not allowed.
I thought it was mainly a liberal trait to try to destroy the lives of successful people.
Having been the target of false accusations by a lying woman myself during the ‘90’s, I am very sensitive to what is going on with both Cain and Paterno.
The claims are unproven and possibly unfounded. Only a TRIAL could reveal the truth (or something close to the truth).
Joe should be given the benefit of the doubt as you say. Where has “innocent until proven guilty” gone?
The man has been convicted only in the “court of public opinion” on the basis of hateful and sanctimonious media reports.
The trustees have shown themselves to be abject cowards. They allowed the MSM to stampede them into canning the most successful coach in America and a MAJOR contributor to University projects.
The fact is that the “gallant” Board has been trying to axe Joe for years: “Too old,” “Out of touch,” etc. The MSM gave them their chance and they lept at it.
I hope Paterno sues them.
Wow. The number of people who have not overreacted - anywhere on the internet, the radio, or on television - is probably less than 10.
I attended Penn State and I have long referred to the Board of Trustees as the “Penn State Politburo.” That is how they act. In this case, I believe as you do that they were merely doing something - ANYTHING - to save face. I believe that in doing so they fired the one man who did anything even approximating the right thing. I mean, here are the facts as we know them:
1) Sandusky wasn’t an employee after 1999. Paterno had no power over him.
2) McQueary witnessed the crime and reported to Paterno. McQueary was not fired. If he had witnessed a murder, would he have gone to Paterno also? I am of the opinion that Paterno never should have been involved. The police can’t start a hearsay investigation simply because the guy reporting the hearsay is famous. That’s not the way they law works.
3) Paterno reported on what he was told to his boss and the de facto police commissioner with jurisdiction. He claims he was not told of the specifics. We will never know what he was told. Still, he took the allegation seriously enough to report it to those two individuals and he put them in touch with the actual witness as well. At this point, having not witnessed anything himself, there is no reason for Paterno to involve himself in any way, including confronting Sandusky. You don’t tip people off that they are the subject of a possible police investigation.
The things I am reading and seeing are absolutely mind-blowing. Yesterday, I heard or read the name “Paterno” hundreds and hundreds of times. What about the monster who was charged with 40 counts of sexual assault? He is solely responsible for those crimes, yet you don’t even see his name. I would bet than 95% of people don’t even know the name of the perpetrator. Yet every idiot with a keyboard and a microphone is saying that “JOE KNEW” and “Joe enabled child rape.”
The fact is the grand jury felt that Paterno met his legal obligation. He said in tears yesterday that with the benefit of hindsight, he wishes he had done more. Yet for being honest he’s crucified even more. Anybody who was a neighbor or coworker to Jeffrey Dahmer could’ve honestly said the same thing. We don’t know what Paterno knew at the time but I believe he deserves the benefit of the doubt. A guy who has given 60 years of his life and his earnings back to the community has earned that. Never a character question in all those years. The program he ran was respected. Yet rather than assuming that Paterno did what the thought was right in 2002, it’s stated that he knew and did nothing - the truth be damned.
This is a sad day and the bloodthirsty mob with their pitchforks and torches will probably never learn. Paterno won’t sue because I don’t think that’s the kind of guy he is, and the amateur Mike Nifongs of the world will continue to bleat.
