Yeah, Paterno should have fired Sandusky on the spo... oh wait. Sandusky was already gone from the coaching staff for three years at that point. Nevermind. Okay, then.. Paterno should have done his job as a police investigator and district attorney and... oh wait. Paterno was never a police investigator or district attorney. Okay, then.. Paterno should have screamed to the rooftops that, based on a fuzzy report from an undergraduate assistant, former coach Jerry Sandusky is a gay pedophile rapist!
Is that what you would have done?
At the very least, Lancey, I would have followed up on a report of child molestation in my facilities by one of my ex employees which I knew had been investigated by the CPS gestapo for child molestation in 1998. After finding that nothing had been done, I would have exercised some leadership and popped smoke on a situation where children were being hurt in an attempt to prevent it from happening again.
Does that clear it up for you?

I don’t think anybody is suggesting that Paterno is legally in the wrong. But there are still a lot of questions, and the bottom line is, if Paterno wanted the molestations to stop, it would have been stopped. Even if he had to go to Sandusky directly and confront him about it.

Not good enough, he knew Sandusky was raping a boy in his team shower. I’m thinking shunning and the stocks, forget retiring into the sunset.

YES, IT IS...
And that has been well documented on FR, over the years no....there have been lots of groups documented here who would LIKE to legalize pedophilia....
but thank God pedophilia is not legal in any state in the union.
Paterno knew...Paterno not only needs to be booted out NOW...he needs to be arrested as an accessory.
I understand that you need to keep your beloved Penn State on top...I do not like nor do follow college sports as it has ZERO to do with education....especially the way it is funded in this country...especially the way schools recruit mental midgets and defectives...but the term FAN should not be abbreviated when FAN means FANATIC and even child rape is acceptable to college football FANATICS

“Again, the lynch mob shouldn’t be aimed at Paterno. That’s like blaming 9-11 on the guy who runs Logan Airport.”
Really? This is ridiculous! Unless the guy at Logan Airport knew and did nothing!
Paterno had a MORAL obligation he ignored in favor of the reputation of a program. How else can you interpret this.
As for me, though it’s not enough, I’m thrilled that Paterno’s legacy will be that of a man who allowed a “little boy butt-raper” to continue his work. He is pitiful.

Gay agenda is not the same as Pedophilia.
Yes it is. Sexual deviancy is deviancy there is a difference between individual adult decisions and child rape...I do not care who does what to whom behind the doors of adults....as long as violence isn't committed.
child rape is ALWAYS violence.

Paterno’s “Departure” is being managed by the University to make it look like if HE goes away, so does the issue, saving everyone’s butts and retirements.

Remember, these people live in a bubble, Happy Valley, and are the KINGS of their domain. No one will dare to question them, after all, they are gods of the campus, and they have “Handled it”.

You're asking Paterno to believe a 28-year-old assistant over a coach he has worked with for 40 years and was probably a close friend. Follow this. Paterno believes that McQueary has brought these horrendous charges against your old friend of fourty years and has caused an internal scandal all the way up to the president. What do you do? Reward him with a position as your WR coach!

Morally complicit in the crime of child molestation. He has to go immediately.

Your stunning disregard for the REAL victims of this crime -- the molested/raped young boys -- absolutely astounds me.
Maybe this hypothetical can better put things in perspective: Imagine YOU were the GOD OF PENN STATE (Joe Pa) and an extremely agitated assistant came up to you and told you that he had just witnessed your son (or grandson) being sodomized in the showers by the former defensive coordinator. Would you have thanked the assistant for his testimony, then wait 24 hours to inform the AD of the assault? And NEVER call the police?
Not what if I were the coach at Penn State, and this same agitated assistant told me that YOUR son (or grandson) was anally raped in the shower room? Would you still defend me for not calling the police, and waiting 24 hours before informing the AD?
My question: Why is it OK for an "anonymous" child to be so heinously disregarded by Joe Pa, but not OK if the child was yours or mine or his?

I wouldn't doubt in the least that Paterno would "believe" Sandusky's denials. In retrospect, it's a huge mistake but, at the time, totally believable. The police had Sandusky on tape in 1998 admitting to molesting a boy in Joe's shower room. It was common knowledge to the staff in the locker room that Sandusky was banging little boys in the locker room. The PSU president knew. The PSU attorneys knew. It doesn't wash that Paterno would believe Sandusky's denials.

He should be gone this week!
As well as that coward who saw the act and did nothing to stop it!

As Head Coach, you take public responsibility for a lot of things but you also have trusted lieutenants to make nasty problems go away and - in many football structures - the Head Coach isn't even told about it. What you are saying is that Joe told his assistants to make sure that problems would go away rather than ensuring an atmosphere where problems were reported and taken care of. That would totally explain why the janitors were afraid of reporting Sandusky raping little kids.
To: OrangeHoof
Oh my sweet Lord, that is the most pathetic crap I have ever read. Have you bothered to read the
grand jury report, specifically the section on Victim 4? Do you truly think that Paterno didn't know his number 1 guy and heir apparent was being investigated for child molestation in 1998 by CPS for events that happened in his facilities?
What?!?
But Head Coaches are usually deaf and dumb to the misdeeds of players and coaches - by design.
If the Head Coach doesn't know about it, he's held less accountable and the program goes on - by design.
So I can fully believe that Paterno didn't know or didn't get all the details.
As Head Coach, you take public responsibility for a lot of things but you also have trusted lieutenants to make nasty problems go away and - in many football structures - the Head Coach isn't even told about it.
Then you toss in the fact that you're talking about a 70-year-old football coach who probably is more CEO than coach at that point and the whole scenario seems completely believable to me.
Wow, does Eric Holder have your number? Considering he's going to get flame sprayed on Dec 8th, maybe he should talk to you first.
That's what is so insidious about pedophilia. The perps often are well-respected people who know that if they are accused, they'll place their reputation against the accuser and ask "who would you believe?" I wouldn't doubt in the least that Paterno would "believe" Sandusky's denials.
Yeah, a classic predator, I know. Why do you think Paterno let him go in 1999? It sure as crap wasn't because Big Gay Jerry wasn't winning games.
