French President Nicolas Sarkozy branded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "a liar" in a private conversation with President Barack Obama that was accidentally broadcast to journalists during last week's G20 summit in Cannes.
"I cannot bear Netanyahu, he's a liar," Sarkozy told Obama, unaware that the microphones in their meeting room had been switched on, enabling reporters in a separate location to listen in to a simultaneous translation.
"You're fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than you," Obama replied, according to the French interpreter.
The technical gaffe is likely to cause great embarrassment to all three leaders as they look to work together to intensify international pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions.
The conversation was not initially reported by the small group of journalists who overheard it because it was considered private and off-the-record. But the comments have since emerged on French websites and can be confirmed by Reuters.
Obama's apparent failure to defend Netanyahu is likely to be leapt on by his Republican foes, who are looking to unseat him in next year's presidential election and have portrayed him as hostile to Israel, Washington's closest ally in the region.
Pushing Netanyahu risks alienating Israel's strong base of support among the US public and in Congress.
Netanyahu's office declined immediate comment.

This line should read....The American press was doing it’s best to cover up this tremendous gaffe by the Socialist one...Oh crap, the french press let the cat out of the bag so now we will probably have to report it.
So Reuters says what Obama actually said is being leaked in the french press, yet still doesn’t report on what was said and provides no links to the french press where the leaks are occuring? Go figure...(eye roll)

Many liberal Jews don't care about Israel, so this won't matter to them. But that group is shrinking both in absolute and relative terms. The fastest growing Jewish cohort is conservative-orthodox...and they LOVE Israel.

You know that had that been a republican president it would have been headline news across the world in a matter of seconds...private conversation or not.
I don’t think it will matter much. Sure, Obama will not receive the same high percentage of votes from Jewish Americans he received in 2008. But the overwhelming majority of Jewish voters in the US will still vote for Obama in 2012 because their liberalism is a higher value than their support of Israel or their fellow Jew.
The Kenyan’s response wasn’t very smart either.
Something has to be done about the jounalist ethics in this country. We all talk about it but do nothing, they are controlling our information to a point where it is like a communist country. I remember the Bush/Cheney open mic episode. No one was interested in protecting Bush, in fact we saw and heard the tape for days upon days.
The objective of the press is not to make sure the public has the news it needs to make informed political decisions come election day, but to improve the chances of pro-abortion and pro-union Democrats controlling as much of the federal government as possible.
Well, maybe you should get on the "Dinosaur Media Deathwatch" pinglist for starters.
Then do tell us what "should be done about journalist ethics" after you tell us what you are going to do about journalistic ethics in this country.
I don’t know. How can American Jews expect a Liberal/Socialist/Radical-Populist President, (elected with the support of American Jews), to feel any more loyalty to Israel and its leadership then THEY do theselves!??
