WASHINGTON (AP) The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits. Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.
Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.
The ranks of the poor would also rise.
The Census Bureau says unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from slipping into poverty last year. It defines poverty as annual income below $22,314 for a family of four.
Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

I suspect they are working under the table.
How about taking a few part time jobs out there, that would equal a full time one until we can get our country back on track?
In related news, the Administration continues to choke and threaten employers, keeping them lurking in the shadows.
FWIW, my prediction is that The Messiah will let these people get a taste of life on no benefits, then, long about April or May will use the Executive Order route to give them another 6 months of benefits. His thinking will be that if any of them doubted him before, he will definitely buy their votes this time around. Yes, he IS that much of a scumbag!
“What’s next?” - I imagine these people go get a job. I’m not trying to be cute; but, there are lots of menial jobs which pay about as much as unemployment. Some will retire early, some will move back in with their parents, some will live on credit cards, sell vehicles, etc....but some will simply have to take a lower paying job.
sad.
It’s all part of the plan. Everyone must be dependent upon the a**holes currently running Washington. I’ve got a feeling this isn’t going to be pretty.
because these unemployed do NOT want to work...
I just had a conversation with the manager for Rite Aid here in Hollywood and they have had the same openings for 6 clerks but the number of applicants are less than expected. He interviewed more than 50 in the last 3 months and their attitude is not the right kind.
My other close bud who works for Worksource in L.A. Gosh, the applicants just want to stay home but HAVE to attend the job trainings because if they do not attend, their benefits will be cut off. Buncha a lazy people..
>>> They’ve had no job for more than 99 weeks. They’re no longer eligible for benefits.
They are also no longer eligible for getting hired either.
Sitting on your ass for 2 years just doesn’t look good on a resume.
They get a job of any sort and become part of the 53% and start paying taxes, only 1% away.
How about, some of us can't even talk anybody into giving us a part-time job?
You got that right!
What next? These people are promptly dropped from the workforce. Unemployment goes down. The press rejoices. Obama takes credit.
Sorry, I guess it depends where you live.
BONG! BONG! BONG!
No further calls, ladies and gentlemen. We have a winner.
You’re right. Bread and circuses. Since all his ideas are failures, the only thing he can do is buy off as many people as he can and hope it’s enough to squeak past election.
Ringling Brothers please call back your Kenyan clown.
Doesn’t that mean that they are no longer counted in the Unemployment figures?
