If slow and steady really does win the race, Newt Gingrich could well end up being the Republican nominee for president.
Thus far, this campaign season has been defined by flash-in-the-pan fortunes. Michele Bachmann was first out of the blocks and won the Iowa straw poll, but this seemed much like a house of straw when Texas governor Rick Perry entered the fray and became her Big Bad Wolf. But then he blew his own house down with a series of disastrous debate performances, allowing the Cain Train to pull into the station. This brings us to where we are now, with Herman Cain holding on to a slim lead over Mitt Romney --- with a lot of voters still undecided. And should the bold businessman's stock crash, where will a plurality of his support go?
The answer may surprise you. If polling is any indication, it's not Tea Party caucus chairman Michele Bachmann or staunch states-rights standard bearer Rick Perry.
It's Newt Gingrich.

I'm leaning that way myself. My perfect choices for President chose not to run this year, so I have to pick from what's left. When I stack Newt Gingrich up against the rest of them, he comes out on top in terms of brains and the ability to be effective. I might like Bachman's consistent conservatism better, but she'd never get her program passed. Herman Cain would get rolled by Congress. Perry can't string two sentences together without shooting himself in the foot. Romney's the biggest RINO on the game preserve. Santorum rubs everybody the wrong way. Don't get me started about Ron Paul. So, where else is there to go realistically? It's Newt the G.
Nope.
Newt is smart, articulate, a good debater, well read, but on the wrong team.
He fully embraced the AGW (Global Warming Scam) and still has never distanced himself from something that most reasonably intelligent people see clearly as a total LIE.
I heard him last week make a statement that the reason the US has so high of long term unemployment is the workers simply do not have the proper skills and that education would fix that. Which is total BS. He and his “Globalist friends” are to blame for this, with their blind leap of faith into that BS. All nations and cultures are not the same and if you think that if we simply open ourselves to trade that the rest of the world will simply reciprocate. Total Lie. Total nonsense, he wants us to think he really believes that?
Newt is not part of the solution, he is part of the cause.
Sorry, Fig Newtons.
LOL!
Just.
LOL!
Correct, we have one of those good talkers who sleeps at 1600 Penn. Ave. And it is clear how that has worked out.
Bump
Argus, I totally understand your thought processes and I think the the same way. Right now Newt is debating Herman Cain and reminds us that his House balanced the budget 4 consecutive years. It seemed impossible, but he got it done.
“I heard him last week make a statement that the reason the US has so high of long term unemployment is the workers simply do not have the proper skills and that education would fix that. “
I agree. He’s simply wrong. The first step is to stop treating employers like their parents. If they have a problem with someone, then they should be able to CAN HIM, without fearing a lawsuit. If they’re dumb enough to do that to good workers, they’ll be Chapter 7. The second step is to END laws that protect workers - first off, get rid of unions, then minimum wage. If a worker is underpaid, then he can LEAVE for greener pastures. The third step is to cut way, way, back on regulations.
As to education, I agree that helps, and needs to be broken up (and the best way is to follow the three steps above)...but education is the longer term solution...right now we need to clean up the mess we’re in now.
“Unfortunately all of the candidates have said they would find such a path for most of the illegals here.”
I haven’t really heard Cain either way. He definitely supports a REAL fence. He also supports the rights of states to make life uncomfortable for Illegals...but that only works in states that want to do that - and California and Texas have ZERO INTEREST in that. So I’d like to see Cain federalize the issue and send home the ones that are not here legally...but no, I haven’t heard him say that.
bttt
The third first step is to cut way, way, back on regulations.
And education today is a misnomer, it has been turned into brainwashing and propaganda. The first step in fixing that is to eliminate the entire U.S. Department of Education including their SWAT teams.
I agree, some of the candidates (e.g., Bachmann) are better on the issue than others (e.g., Perry). But a number of debates back Herman also said he’d accommodate those already here. (Everyone on the stage said a version of the same thing.)
No
What might happen is nobody wants Mitt and Cain may faulter and Newt becomes the default.
I’m going to go to sleep tonight repeating these words in my head;
“Besides, the liberal heads will explode over the election of anyone other than a democrat.”
Sweet dreams are made of this.....
;]
Do you have a source for your conflated account?
“Newt who took $300,000 plus from Fannie and Freddie to prevent them getting reformed thus helping with his good buddies Frank and Dodd cause the 2008 crash”
The only way to make a Newt/obama debate fair would be to give obama all the questions with answers beforehand. And Newt would still make mincemeat out of Hussein.
I am scared of Cain. I think he’s just a collection of clever soundbites and he does not have the experience I am looking for in POTUS.
I thought Newt would do himself a lot of good tonight on CSPAN. He did and so did Cain. They exchanged notes just before the start of the dialogue. I think they have an agreeement to kick the rest of the field to the curb and be the last two on the Island. OK by me.
