Most of the unemployed no longer receive benefits

WASHINGTON (AP) — The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.

Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.

The ranks of the poor would also rise. The Census Bureau says unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from slipping into poverty last year. It defines poverty as annual income below $22,314 for a family of four.

Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

Their options include food stamps or other social programs. Nearly 46 million people received food stamps in August, a record total. That figure could grow as more people lose unemployment benefits.

So could the government's disability rolls. Applications for the disability insurance program have jumped about 50 percent since 2007.

See? That’s why conservatives lose...you play by the rules while those libs break them.

BTW..those same libtards voted for Obama which got us Obamacare etc.

YOU are the one who’s sick. YOU allowed these jackholes to ruin the country and YOU give them a pissy free pass.

they do pay too low and the fact that there are freepers touting those despicable ads for $10/hour is proof to me that some of the negative stereotypes of republicans are true...in some cases.

If I was unemployed I’d rather stay home than subject myself to unfair compensation. Or maybe I would get that job just to see what was going on, then demand a wage increase. But I guarantee you i would not stay there for that pay rate. for chrissakes, I got hired $8.50/hour over 20 years ago to be a dumb laborer and there was no requirement for transportation, steel toe, drug screen, or telephone.

let me enlighten you...

the average idiot obama voter NEVER donates money or time to any campaign and half the time they don’t even bother to vote. If they do good work and you pay them well, they are not a threat to america. As long as they are doing good work, busting their ass, and they think they’re earning your respect...if anything they are going to start thinking like you, not a marxist revolutionary.

Politics is a secondary issue when it comes to employment. That is my final word on this matter.

I have been looking at want ads... commented to my office mate that the jobs are paying less or the same as I made doing less 8.5 years ago. He replied back: this is part of the recession we are in, not only no jobs, but the pay is unlivable.

"Why is it that we don't have double-digit unemployment?? The unemployment rate was 9.1%, the numbers are bad every month, and now the rate is 9%. "

If the unemployment rate is calculated the way it was when Clinton was president, it's above 22.0%. That's in league with the Great Depression rates.

Don't believe anything the government says.

“Politics is a secondary issue when it comes to employment.”

and explain why is that so in Hollywood, or Facebook, Google, Apple, MSNBC etc when they hire liberals and demonize conservatives?

Again, you play by the rules while they laugh at you.

It is starting pay for unskilled, manual labor. If I were an unemployed, unskilled 18 to 20 year old kid I’d be all over it.
If you choose not to work for that kind of money I’m all for that freedom of choice. What I’m not for is you or someone else deciding that working for x amount is beneath you so you stay home sitting on your butt on MY dollar in the form of govt assistance.

I’ve never cared who laughs at me and I’m not going to start.

Democrats get their campaign money from rich people and from illegal methods(ie unions and other corruption such as solyndra). Your average run of the mill democrat voter is a good person that just happens to be ignorant of politics and the economy. Sure there are the rotten tomatoes...the true believers...the marxists and the sickos that actually believe commerce, technology, and capitalism is destroying the planet and is the scourge of humanity. Most democrat voters are not like that at all. most of them are more like you and I than the marxists...they’re just too dumb to realize it.

I honestly believe this.

If someone goes 99 weeks without a paycheck they should no longer be counted as part of the workforce. I mean, let’s get real here, after 99 weeks, basically 2 years, a person simply isn’t willing to work.

“$10/hr.”

That is about what the 99 weekers get on unemployment. I’ve heard several say they wouldn’t go to work for $10/hr. Of course, they fail to understand that they are getting their foot in the door and no matter if they made $100k before if this is the only work then take it and move up or keep looking for a better job anyway.

“If you are still looking for work you are still counted, whether you receive unemployment or not.”

How would the government know that?

The BLS performs a telemarketing campaign to determine averages of who is and is not looking for work. They have no idea specifically who is or isn’t and their numbers are notoriously off by large margins.

From the article:

Jon Polis lives in East Greenwich, R.I., one of the 20 states where 99 weeks of benefits are available. He used them all up after losing his job as a warehouse worker in 2008. ... He's been unable to find work because employers in his field want computer skills he doesn't have.

I wonder what computer skills means in the context of warehouse worker. Making a bar-code scanner beep?

Politics is a secondary issue when it comes to employment. That is my final word on this matter.

It's a shame you have met the end of the reasoning road. The posters who have said they won't hire liberal Dems did not mention they won't hire because the applicants are liberal, but because they have found that liberals make terrible workers. Most likely to screw around on the job, most likely to steal (whether by absconding with merchandise or trimming hours), most likely to sue the crap out of you if you have to can them.

Sure, politics is secondary, but that's not to say politics is inconsequential.

Sorry to have bothered you after you declared the subject dead. I'd hate like heck to work for someone like you. That is my final word on this matter.

I was out of work for almost a year and a half not too long ago. I applied for every job I was physically capable of doing, but on an awful lot of them, I got the “We would love to hire you, but you are just too over-qualified” bit. I tried dumbing down my resume, but that had little effect as well. I also discovered that Austin, TX is not someplace to have a military background on your resume.

I'm sorry... but in 99 weeks, you could teach yourself at least basic computer skills from used (and therefore inexpensive) books. If you're smart, you could probably even teach yourself web design or programming in that much time.

I had a similar problem about ten years ago. Even the temp agencies would not hire me. I could not even get a phone call from anyone. Most people would just refuse to even take a phone call from me after I sent them my resume. after 6 months of not even a single interview, I got desperate and started applying for temp agencies and asking employment agencies to find me a job. The employment agencies would pass my file around from one person to another and then they would stop returning my phone calls.

ONly one temp agency would give me a reason why they would not place me in a job...”we just don’t feel you are the right kind of person for us. Your resume is too varied and not believable.” By the time I had started looking for temp work, I had added every job all the way back to age 18(which only amounted to 6 different employers with about 3 different positions per employer)to my resume. They just did not want me. After ten months of no prospects, I decided to take over the family business. Its been a wild ride.

I remember one temp agency asked me to take a typing test. and to verify my knowledge of MS office. I had recently spent a month of typing and debugging fortran code from poor photocopies of photocopies of printouts. This was before scanning software was very common and would not work on a poor photocopy. I got extremely good at typing all the numbers and symbols without looking at the keyboard, blazing fast too. I aced their test like a champ. I doubt many people there could do as good or better. The guy that gave me the test barely said a word to me and wouldn’t look me in the eye.

Sorry but you arent JimRob. You dont get to ban men from a job interview because they dont vote for “your guy”. Illegal, and unconstitutional to boot. And immoral.

Some day you will be in their shoes. Karma is a bitch and a half.

Um, no. I have programmed before and not everyone is cut out for it. Computer science is a MATH discipline. People who hate programming usually write lousy code. Please keep them as far away from me as possible, thanks.

Yeah, one temp agency had me take a test to verify my MS Office knowledge. It was a multiple choice computer-based exam. After which, I told the examiner the errors on the test and showed her at least three other ways of doing each of the operations the test had asked about.

The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Great news for us who run small businesses - maybe we can actually find some willing employees at $12/hour now, instead of people who would rather just stay home and collect their $10/hour from the government.
