Forget Wall Street, Occupy Hollywood
National Post ^ | 11-4-11 | Rex Murphy

Posted on 11/05/2011 11:00:08 AM PDT by ReformationFan

You hear it in every little encampment in every city that has a franchise in the current “Occupy” protests: The righteous tent-and-yurt people are against “greed.”

They see greed as the demonic dynamo of a rapacious capitalism (and its maidservant, “income inequality”). And what represents greed better than mega-payoffs, dazzling bonuses and stock options, for very little actual work, and sometimes even when performance is far below par? It is only to be expected that the high-flying brokers, bankers and CEOs that cluster like flies around the honey pots of Wall Street, who waltz off with payoffs that would shame a Croesus, are the occupiers’ main targets.

I suggest, however, that by limiting their wrath to the sharks and swine of Wall Street, they are, if I may say, shortchanging themselves. There are many venues and theatres of greed other than the stock market. And they are tenanted by agents of ferocity and appetite equal to any gold-lusting shill at an investment bank. Greed has many McMansions, and they are all worth the “occupying.”

Has anyone, for example, apart from her jilted “husband,” thought of occupying … Kim Kardashian?

Of course, I mean “occupy” purely in its fashionable protest sense. Occupy her, not for being even more formidably vulgar and avaricious than Paris Hilton, a truly Olympic distinction. No — occupy her for running a tawdry TV spectacle called (hand over mouth, please) Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event, selling the rights, drowning in the publicity and then announcing the “divorce” a mere 72 days into the staged connubial farce.

Most of us fully support capitalism where risk taken justifies reward received if it is based upon merit and success.

What I can’t support is the blatant corruption that has overtaken this country and has tainted capitalism. It rewards those who fail with our tax money because crooked politicians (in both Parties) have a penchant and the ability to give away our money to their crooked connected friends.

The politicians blatantly get bribes and kickbacks and they call them campaign contributions. The lobbyist and big money needs removed from the election process. Otherwise we are headed towards the total corruption of our country that spreads like aggressive cancer. Electioneering should be about getting citizen supporters and volunteerism and not about money and global interests.

That’s why the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution the way they did. Put severe and clear limits on government powers, and corruption will wither and die. Let capitalism flourish and cronyism will be eradicated.

That said, the poor - and the rich - will always be with us. Life is not fair, and some will leverage that fact for good or ill.

"Sexual capital or erotic capital is a form of social worthiness granted to an individual, as a result of his or her sexual attractiveness to the majority of his or her social group. As with other forms of capital, sexual capital is convertible, and may be useful in acquiring other forms of capital, including social capital and economic capital."

Gives a new meaning to "Capitalist Pig".

The occupiers are nothing less than want-a-be FARCers and Columbia just showed U.S. how to handle them.

The politicians blatantly get bribes and kickbacks ..

I have been bringing up inside trading within the government for a long time now..ever since Lieberman was interviewed on the subject and he said there were was no regulation, as no bill had been focused upon to deal with "insider knowledge" turning into "insider trading". Again laws for the rest of us, but they are too busy to make it law for themselves.

Rush brought it up a week ago like he never knew it existed. Pelosi got caught in a press talk the other day on the subject of her "insider knowledge" into a possible family "buy"..and she was really put out about it and escaped an answer.

This intended loophole within our government always needed more attention, like when they would arrest Al Capone and he would go down only after bringing in the IRS. More attention to this story..would show the public how corrupt these people really are in their WALL STREET insider activities.

I agree on insider trading.

Every elected official from local, state to federal should be required to provide a statement at the beginning of their term of net worth and assets. It would be the price of what they like to say is “serving”. Actually most of them serve only themselves at our expense.

When they leave office they should be required to provide a similar accounting, plus they should be required to justify and explain and swear to the accuracy of every increased dollar that they’ve made, much like a tax statement.

Failure to explain accurately or disclose truthfully should be an automatic 5-10 year no probation prison sentence at hard time, and most importantly without any statute of limitations. They need held accountable and without any ability to sidestep the punishment and crime forever.

Concerning OWS.

Some maybe, but far from all. There are many rightfully PO’d people in the USA and many have lost economic opportunities because of a corrupt government of bribed politicians that no longer serves we the people. Throw every last one of them out of office. Then take out the darts, the phone books, and give the dart boarded ones only one term. We’d be better off than having our pols beholden to lobbyists and those with the most money.

Maybe they should just go back and occupy Academia, 'cause that's who's been lying to them and taking their money.

I’m waiting for the Occupy Death Valley stage....it ought to be interesting, if it could just last out until July of next year.
