Andy Rooney, Mainstay on ‘60 Minutes’, Dead at 92

Andy Rooney, whose prickly wit was long a mainstay of CBS News and whose homespun commentary on “60 Minutes,” delivered every week from 1978 until 2011, made him a household name, died Friday in New York City.

He was 92 and lived in Manhattan, though he kept a family vacation home in Rensselaerville, N.Y., and the first home he ever purchased, in Rowayton, Conn.

CBS News said in a statement that Mr. Rooney died after complications following minor surgery.

In late September, CBS announced that Mr. Rooney would be making his last regular weekly appearance on “60 Minutes” on Oct. 2. After that, said Jeff Fager, the chairman of CBS News and the program’s executive producer, he would “always have the ability to speak his mind on ‘60 Minutes’ when the urge hits him.”

Why do the nasty ones seem to live longer than the nice ones?

Andy Rooney’s last words were: “Get off my lawn you kids.”

(Used to be) living proof that liberal curmudgeon can be a profession.

Bless him for his service to our Nation.

One of the things that sets Free Republic apart from the rest (aside from the obvious conservative bent) are all of the comments that I see offering prayers and good wishes when someone of a differing political opinion dies, or is deathly ill.

Makes me sick when I hear O’Reily make a moral equivalence between FR and Daily KOS. We know better!

I guess I am. Unless you can explain how he is not.

He was an anti-war socialist correspondent. Tell it like it is.

Bless him for his service to our Nation.

Bless him for his service to socialism. He was a socialist anti-war propagandist, NOT a soldier.

Yeah, I thought that nice guys were supposed to finish last? What's up with that?!

Um...you realize that for at least some of the articles he got on the plane, right? Eighth Air Force bomber crews had higher casualties than the USMC and the submarine service combined; anyone who took even one of those flights in any capacity has risked more for their country than most Americans ever think of risking.

Did he risk it for America or for his career?

He changed his mind once he got there and saw what the Germans were about. The man hasd enough problems to criticize without falsely portraying him as Hitler’s butt buddy.

and supported the effort.

And that is why he opened his memoirs with "Any peace is better than war"?

I didn't protray him as Hitler's butt buddy. Please don't portray that I did. Most American socialists hated Hitler when he attacked the 'homeland' ...

I sincerely hope he changed his mind. I will say a prayer for him as we're supposed to do. Eventually. Kind of busy today, though.

I hope you are not referring to AR as a vet ...

Cram it, noob. Cram it twice if you haven't served in the military.

Andy Rooney was an atheist, liberal jerk but he signed up and flew over Germany, so as an Air Force vet I say he's our atheist, liberal jerk and you should shut your piehole unless you have more combat time than him. You should also consider that he said that after seeing the concentration camps he became deeply ashamed of his pacifism. We'll see if you have enough character to express shame for slandering a man who probably did more for America as a lefty pacifist than you've done as a conservative.

Still remember him saying why do we have a guy at the restaurant with a pepper mill, can’t I crack my own pepper. Why doesn’t he do my salt, too?

Was pretty funny.

Well, liberal or not, rip, Andy.
