Well it DID originate with the Lincoln administration. During the Civil War. Didn’t actually become an official motto until 1956. Waste of time.

Actually, Lincoln's people got it from one of the later verses of the poem "The Star Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
