Ironically, since both Werner and John Banner were both Jews that got the hell out of Germany before the s#it the fan... There's a number of stories about Hogan's Heroes that make it interesting:
- Robert Clary (Corp. LeBeau) actually spent time in a Polish concentration camp, and had the number tattooed on his arm. He lost his parents and other family members to the concentration camp.
- John Banner (Sgt. Schultz) was an Austrian Jew that spent some time in a pre-war concentration camp, and lost most of his family to the concentration camps.
- Leon Askin (Gen. Burkhalter) was in a pre-war internment camp, and his parents were killed at Treblinka.
- Howard Caine (Gen. Hochstetter), Harold Gould, and Howard Stone were all American Jews that played German generals.
- Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink) reportedly had a stipulation in his contract: his character would always be a buffoon that would be bested by his American counterpart (Hogan). Otherwise, he would have walked.
