Newt and the "next-in-line" problem
The American Thinker ^ | October 25, 2011 | Steve McCann

Posted on 11/04/2011 9:18:28 AM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

The Republican presidential nominating process must break out of its "next-in-line" syndrome. The party establishment, unable to comprehend the depth of voter angst, the desire for genuine change, and the true extent of America's current dire predicament, is still stuck in that rut as it continues its unenthusiastic but overt support for Mitt Romney, the current "next-in-line" candidate.

This is not the United States of the past sixty years, wherein it mattered relatively little which party occupied the White House or dominated the Congress. While the most dramatic steps in setting the nation on the course that has brought the country to the brink of bankruptcy were launched during the years of total Democrat control, the Republican Party, with the exception of Ronald Reagan and the Republican leaders of the House of Representatives in 1995, has been content to simply slow down the statist policies of the Democratic Party without reversing the trajectory established by them.

It is this mindset that has created the "next-in-line" process. Candidates for the Republican presidential nomination deemed to have paid their dues in a previous presidential run (or who are related to a former president) were arbitrarily moved to the front of the class. This course of action has been justified by the Republican establishment on the basis that these were the most "electable" candidates, as they supposedly appealed to the independents. The corollary to this axiom: a truly conservative candidate could not win a national election -- never mind that Ronald Reagan won in two massive landslides and bequeathed residual goodwill that resulted in the election of George H.W. Bush in 1988 as his successor.

This is the argument being used to justify the nomination of Mitt Romney. The unease among the rank-and-file Republicans regarding Romney is well-justified.

So, was Mitt granted ‘next in line’ status based on his last unsuccessful try for the nomination? Was he given extra credit because his father also failed to get the Republican nom for President? Is this some twisted version of affirmative action GOP style?

Newt is very intelligent, a master of history and a superb debater but Newt’s Achilles heel is his total lack of judgement. I simply can not trust him

the rino-progressives did not want ronald reagan, nor do they now want herman cain.

real conservatives want more than the rino-progressives like the bushes, bob dole and john mccain.

What world is this author living in? It has always mattered greatly which party held the power. When liberals are in charge they always push for and get more socialism/communism.

I second that! While Willard has the market cornered on greasy used car salesman, Newt is like a sneaky uncle that everyone just tolerates.

I'd be reluctant but accepting of Gingrich on the ticket in the VP slot, but Cain's got my nod for Pres.

Newt would make a great VP. But, there are too many issues with Newt on flip flopping on key issues and, there are skeletons in Newt’s closet that make the Cain affair look trivial. The media will, in December, make the entire world aware of Newt’s infidelity, cheating on his wives, and other unnamed allegations.

Care to name some of those unamed allegations? You seem to suggest you have some inside information that the rest of us don’ have. Care to share it or are you just wishing?

As for Newt, he is the only one running that has ever balanced the US budget and he is the only one running that has ever actuallly cut welfare as we know it. Is he the perfect candidate? Course not.....! Do you know anyone who is?

Nothing else will matter if we don’t get someone in there who will 100% support ISRAEL against the ISLAMIC wave that Obama helped unleash in the middle east. Time is ticking and one thing I know is in Gen 12:3 - God said to Abraham, “I will bless them that bless you and I will CURSE them that curse you”...

Both parties were dominated by liberals. How else has the Federal Government mushroomed to its present grotesque size?

Seems like liberals got a lot of their wishes under Nixon, Ford and even the two Bushes.

But you’re right.

LOL. Herman Cain 2012 is akin to Ronald Reagan?? That’s a laugher.

Herman Cain is NOTHING like Ronald Reagan. Reagan had a TON of political experience before the election of 1980. He had been a national political figure for decades. Herman Cain barely understands a lot of fundamental things that a president will have to handle.

I’m sure he’s a great guy, but he’s not presidential material. He just isn’t.

I got a 3 page letter & a 4 page ‘survey’ from the RNC. I filled out the survey-—but didn’t give them a single dime.

Instead, I wrote a full page letter about why I won’t give any money to the RNC. I also told them I ws tired og the East Coast Elite Republicans picking the candidate for President based upon ‘It’s My Turn” or, as stated here, the “Next In Line’ syndrome.

I clearly told them I would never vote for Romney. If Romney were my only choice, I would vote, but in that category, I would be an undervoter.

The GOP didn’t learn with Bob Dole—a perfectly nice man—, nor did it learn with John McCain. I applaud McCain’s military service & the time he was a POW, but he never made a good Presidential candidate, IMO.

I want a CONSERVATIVE——a TALL LETTERS CONSERVATIVE to be put into the White House.

I want the Imposter taken out & indicted for his failure to obey the Constitution, along with Holder, Geithner, & others. I want the Shadow Government of Czars indicted, also.
