If you are as sick of the sound bite debate format as I am, there is cause to cheer today. C-SPAN has announced that it will televise Saturday night's debate between Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain in Texas. We shall finally have a shot at the longed-for Lincoln-Douglas style extended discussion.

Lincoln-Douglas style debate without liberal moderator, but with full answers allowed and Rep. Steven King as "time keeper". Should be interesting!

Set DVR to that time and SPAN 1, but it shows a program called “American Perspectives”. Hope it records the debate!

I like both, but seems like Newt would be awfully hard to beat in this format.

Remember there is a time change coming up. Maybe that has something to do with it. Check 7 p.m. Eastern as well, looks like it is 6:00 p.m. Central according to their flyer: http://thewoodlandsteapartypac.com/the-cain-gingrich-debate-2011/

I suspect it’ll be more like a constructive discussion between two adults, rather than a competitive debate per se. Where the objective will be to learn, rather than simply ‘win’.
To: AmericanInTokyo
I’m pleased C-SPAN is running it.

I like both, but seems like Newt would be awfully hard to beat in this format.Mybe they are more evenly matched than you mike expect. Cain has the advantage in that he is extremely likeable in a public forum. Newt always comes off as somewhat arrogant which is a disadvantage in a debate.

Maybe they are more evenly matched than you might expect.
Still early here.

I haven’t watched any of the previous debates because the sight of that greasy New Englander Willard Mitt Romney makes me wants to retch, but I plan on tuning in for this one...

Agreed. It will be darn hard for Cain to look any better than “mediocre”.

This is far better a debate format for two people who can’t stand each other. Otherwise, it an academic exercise.

Who are the two people?
(As I understand it, Cain and Gingrich have great respect for one another.)

“..Newt would be awfully hard to beat in this format.”
That was my first thought, too.
Newt will focus on his knowledge about foreign policy issues. Although I can’t stand the man because of his past ethical & moral blunders, you do have to admit he does very well in a debate forum.
Look for him to gain 5% or more points in the polls while Cain drops an equal amount.
