Despite a world of skepticism about E-Cat and other devices, proof is adding up
Italian physicist and inventor Andrea Rossi has conducted a public demonstration of his "cold fusion" machine, the E-Cat, at the University of Bologna, showing that a small amount of input energy drives an unexplained reaction between atoms of hydrogen and nickel that leads to a large outpouring of energy, more than 10 times what was put in.
The first seemingly successful cold fusion experiment was reported two decades ago, but the process has forever been met with heavy skepticism. It's a seemingly impossible process in which two types of atoms, typically a light element and a heavier metal, seem to fuse together, releasing pure heat that can be converted into electricity. The process is an attractive energy solution for two reasons: Unlike in nuclear fission, the reaction doesn't give off dangerous radiation. Unlike the fusion processes that take place in the sun, cold fusion doesn't require extremely high temperatures.

Yup! We know it is credible when MSNBC says so ...
“And that development is exactly what all our trolls here wish to prevent.”
Are we hurting your financial position?

You don’t see 40% as a large difference?
As for the weight, yes when weight is a large issue, hydrogen has some redeeming qualities.

.
No, but your cousin Baraq is.

My guess is that if even 1% of the effort that has been wasted on hot fusion were directed at LENR we would find that the more plentiful metals would work too.
Also all of them can likely be made considerable more efficient.
That’s why they use hydrogen to power locomotives and ships...
“My guess is that if even 1% of the effort that has been wasted on hot fusion.....”
Good point.
I’m a passionate supporter of basic science.
But the bill for 60 years of fusion reactor research by the super powers is at least $40 billion.
Amount of commercial electricity generated?
Nada.
I’ve grown to feel the same way about the Space Station.
$100 billion.
Will that produce valuable technology and benefit future generations?
Sure.
But if we had done $100 billion of basic research on clean coal, fission reactors, solar, wind, and batteries, we would have saved trillions of dollars in energy and military costs.
Thats why they use hydrogen to power locomotives and ships...
Weight advantages not mentioned in any articles of hydrogen powered locomotives or ships ...
I said hydrogen has a very high energy-to-weight ratio, which is why it's used as rocket fuel. I didn't say that hydrogen has a high energy-to-cost ratio, which is why it's not used for most other purposes.
Relative to the amount that seems to get used in the E-cat, we have a LOT of nickel. Before the available nickel here gets used up, we'll have access to nickel-iron asteroids.
How much nickel seems to be used in the e-cat?
Hard to tell. They have a few grams in each unit, and the unit needs to have the nickel changed every 6 months, but how much of that is from nickel being transmuted versus the nickel powder getting cruddy, I don't know.
I've heard various estimates for the energy release per fusion. About 8 Mev seems average among the estimates I've seen. That would be 10^-12 joules per atom, times Avogadro's number (6.0221415 × 10^23) = 8*10^11 joules per mole (59 grams for nickel). So 59 grams of nickel would produce on the order of (8*10^11 / 1,000,000 / 3600 = ) over 200 MWH
All the above is seat-of-pants wild guess, of course, and also assumes that the E-cat actually works.
What form is that 8 Mev? I know quite a bit about fission but haven't studied fusion very much.
Have you ever seen one? (Loco, or ship)
There’s been well over $40 billion spent at Livermore alone.
May have but doubt it.
Yep. One gram of nickel will give you more fuel than you could use in a lifetime. If these machines are compact, the gasoline engine will be obsolete immediately.
You called it Bro. MASS Kudos to you!!!
And pure water will kill any disease.
